I have an 1998 I30 with 80k. The car runs perfect and I currently use 10w-30 in it every 3500 miles. I have been thinking about going over to Synthetic oil, but some people have told me that with an engine with that many miles on it that it could do more harm than good by removing the 'sludge' that is in the engine that might be causing the engine to run fine. What is your take on this, and if I did go to Synthetic, how often should I change it and the oil filter also.

The concern is not with dislodging something that's holding the engine together; the concern is with dislodging something that will end up somewhere else where it can do some harm. It sounds like you have very good maintenance habits. Given that and "only" 80k, I wouldn't worry about there being much sludge in the engine. I see no problem with going to synth; only benefits. If sludge is a concern then try a gradual cleaning process over 2-3 months using oil changes every 2 weeks, and gentle cleaning just prior to each change with a little BG cleaner or (I think) transmission fluid, which is reputed to have cleaning/solvent properties.

A good compromise is a synthetic blend. I used Valvoline Durablend for about a year in my '92 Q before switching to full synthetic.

I get much smoother response in high rpm range with full synthetic. Also distributes better on cold starts.

Go to T-3 and buy some BG 111 (used to be called BG MOA) oil additive. Use half a can or a full can per oil change. Will make you engine run "like buttah". (More anti-wear additives).
