I just did a search on this forum and couldn't find anything on synthetic oils. So far I've seen one member who recommended Royal Purple. Is their anyone else experienced in synthetics?

I'm assuming it would be a good thing to use? The reason I say this is synthetics are a no-no with the RX-8 as the rotary needs to burn oil.

Synthetic oil's are great, they allow you to make fewer oil changes and are better overall for the engine. But you if your going to switch you should do it before 60,000 miles otherwise you may end up burning oil. I prefer Amsoil synthetic, you can find it online and at napa, they also sell a reusable oil filter.

Agreed. If you have a lot of miles on your car and you have been useing normal oil don't switch to synthetic. If you do there's a chance it will clean out the oil build up in certain areas and lots of things could start leaking.

For me that's not a problem. I just turned 1200 miles today.

you have to be careful if your still in break in period. Some synthetics like royal purple withh tell you to wait and use after break in. I didnt start using it till 6kmiles on mine, but when i did the difference was definately felt.

Started using Mobil-1 at 1200 miles...You can really feel the difference the first time you drive after the oil change....

The engine feels "looser", using the synthetic over the conventional oil. You can feel the lubrication difference it's that different...

synthetic FOREVER!

This is amazing. This makes three people now who say they notice a difference. I'm going to wait till I'm near 3,000 miles then I'm going to switch.

Do you guys still change oil every 3 months/3,000 miles when using synthetic or do you stretch your intervals?

If you have several miles on your car and you want to convert to a synthetic, try a slow conversion...Assuming you are using regular (dino) oil, wait until your next oil change and put in a synthetic blend. Run that for 6k miles doing an oil change (with the blend) every 2k miles. Then switch to a full synthetic. This gives your engine time to "adjust" to the new oil and it's safer than just dropping full sythetic into a high mileage engine with dino oil.I have seen quite a few posts on here talking about people doing the direct conversion and having oil burn issues.Full synthetic makes a big difference in the end. I'm sure you will be happy if you convert.

How many is alot in therms of changing over oils, i have almost 12000 not quite yet but i will soon. Is that to many miles to change over or does it have to be way higher to do any harm?

you can still change over, the big number is about 60,000. The reason is that reg oil has a much larger molecule than synthetic, now these molecules are what keep the pistons off the cylinder wall. over time they where a groove into the cylinder wall. So when you switch to a synthetic oil with a smaller molecule they shoot clean through the grooves like a tunnel, and that's it in a nutshell.

Like I stated above high miles = possible leaks.

AMSOIL all the way baby, it is better than Royal Purple and Mobile 1 with tests to prove it. If you still have relativley low miles I would recommend using the AMSOIL flush to help clean out any build up/sludge. You add the flush to your old oil, I recommend putting on a new oil filter(FRAM) for this to get a really good flush. You have to run your car at about 1500RPM for about 10-15min, then drain the oil and remove oil filter replace with AMSOIL oil and oil filter.

ROYALE PURPLE..... If you are going to switch to anything that is by far the way to go. Oil wise, radiator, etc. There brand side by side with others is so much better. I have alot of horsepower and the last thing you want is oil break down or OVERHEATING. I live by there coolant. Not cheap though

Even with synthetics, change your oil and filter at 3000-5000 mile intervals. The oil has not broke down yet but gets dirty just from normal operation. Look at your dip stick with just 3000 miles and see the color difference. Its the cheapest insurance for longevity and protection to your motor.

switched over to royal purple on friday @ 3300mi. , cost: around $55.00 done by a local shop. you can tell a difference. at one point the engine was so quiet at idle, i thought the engine killed. they do make liquids for trans. and radi., i'm getting those done this week, i'll keep you posted.

I use Royal Purple in my RX-8's 6-sp transmission. Made a difference. For some reason when I'd get on it and try shifting from first to second, second would lock me out. I put in Royal Purple and the problem basically disappeared.

I'm thinking of doing this to my Z as well. Second gear seems very tight but other wise I love the "bolt action" feel of my transmission.
