Welcome!

My personal suggestion:For winter, 5w30.For summer, 10w40.Some use 5w40 and 0w-40 all year round, depending on climate conditions and region.

Doing NICO searches for oil-related posts under the screen name "PalmerWMD" will bring up TONS of valuable information that I could never remember on my own.

I run mobil 1 0w40 in the winter (I dont think they carry that anymore, i think its 5w40) and right now I have redline 10w30 in there...

Personanlly, with 80k on the engine, id stick to your 30 weight oils until you get into higher mileages, then go with 40s..

Also search for some posts by FalkDesigns, he has a similar year and has looked at a few different oil options.

His posts may also add some valuable information on that specific model of Q.

Welcome to NICO.

They now carry bnoth the 5w-40 "SUV" Mobil1 and the 0w-40 and a 10w-40 Extended Perf Mobil1

All are full syns, for a Q45 year around I prefer the Ow-40 out of the bunch if you keep your oil change intervals reasonable.(Reasons for my prefernence vs the other M1 40 weight syns, take too much typing so I wont post 'em unless asked)

If on a budget Valvoline Durablend is a great compromise I also especially like their 10w-40 for a Q45 in summer.

So far it seems to be good, its bene in the car for I think 2000 miles and its already fairly dark... Didnt seem to get dark as fast as my mobil 1.... Since I drive lower miles than most, I base my oil changes from time rather than mileage... Its been in for 2months right now, i cant rememer the exact mileage I put it in at... but Ill probably do my next change in 2-3 months, right before I go down to NOPI... May try and engine flush this time, see if it does anything on a lightly varnished engine...

Ill have an oil analysis done after im done... Ill probably use it next summer, after I use my mobil 1 0w40 for the winter...

Part of the reason that your oil may be dark is because it's cleaning the varnish itself, before you do an engine flush. I did the Amsoil engine flush before using Amsoil last year when I got my Q, and the Amsoil stayed like watered down Coke color even at 8k miles. I now have Redline which has about 3500 miles on it and it's still pretty light - probably because I did a flush last year and ran Amsoil prior to Redline. I did oil analysis on the Amsoil, and it came back with flying colors. My engine still idles smoother than it did with the new Dinosaur oil it came with from the Infiniti dealer. A true 100% syn oil will out-perform dino oil, even when it has 10k on it.

As Falk mentions, the darkness can be from the detergents in the oil, it probably has stronger detergents and therefore is cleaning more than any oil has in the past. That in part is why they say to change the filter, but not the oil on some of the synths.

Exactly. I'm due for a new filter shortly myself actually.

See some people are open to the idea of learning something new, even if they don't argree with it .

Not related to this thread ...

Food for thought:The FISRT step in disagreeing with someone is understanding them to the point you can explain the topic back to them to their satisfaction. Then and only then, can you really disagree with them.
