Hey guys, I am new to this forum. Just bought a 3.5 SE altima coupe on sunday :-)

I had a question, I see most of you guys want to convert to synthetic. I am under the impression that once you convert to synthetic oil, you can never go back to regular oil, is that true?

I did google the disadvantages of synthetic oil, but i didn't find anything that said I can't convert back, most disadvantages of synthetic oil were listed as more costly and more prone to leaks, and not good at breaking the car in. I also read the oil change thread, but i didn't see anyone mention about not being able to convert back.

Since I heard this through word of mouth, I was hoping people could provide me with knowledge on this subject.

With today's manufacturing process and quality levels of oils with many additives and detergents, its been said you can switch between regular and synthetic on every oil change if you'd like. A few years ago it was not recommended to go back to conventional oil after using syn.

And your correct about the engine break in. Moving mechanical parts require a certian amount of "seating", which is basically mating 2 surfaces to work with each other. Synthetic oil provides such superior lubrication, that components don't seat/wear together properly.

Thanks for the response!

When do you suggest I change to synthetic? I'm at 200 miles on my odometer right now.

What are these Nissan oil filters I keep hearing about? Do you have to use these filters? Or can you still go to your local auto parts store and pick up a FRAM or Duraguard or some other brand?

If there are other options, why do people keep using the Nissan ones? Is that recommended?

Although i never buy into anything that a salesman tells me, this was one piece of advice that i liked, and i believe i'll adhere to. He recommended that at least while i'm under warranty, i can do my own oil changes, but to use nissan branded oil filters to cover my *** in case there is an engine problem

I was that too. You switched already? I was always told to do with around 20k/km.

About FRAM, I read too many threads saying to avoid it.

I've had a lot of luck with Fram for an accumulative 140,000 miles in my other vehicles. I too have heard that they are not of the best quality. I just might continue to use nissan oil filters for the life of the car. If the manufacturer doesn't make them, i'm sure they use a company thats worth sticking to, and at $6 for a nissan filter, thats an average price, and the dealer is about as far as the autoparts store. I'll stick with mobile 1 and nissan filters

I'm going on 6 months and about 2500-3000 kms since I put in synthetic. I was gonna wait till the fall to change it again. Is this ok or should I change it asap? The car runs great.

Old thread bump record?

Synthetic last longer than conventional oil, so I change mine every 5-7k miles or 8-10k kilometers. I don't pay much attention to the date, just change it regularly.

I've seen peeps get grilled for starting new threads on topics that have already been discussed so I figured, why not just bump an old thread? Thanks for the advice! I'm guessing I should stick with synthetic from now on or will changing back to regular oil cause issues?

You can switch back and forth as often as you like, just remember to change it sooner if you run conventional oil. Honestly though, I would just stick with synthetic.

I read the thread before I saw how old it was and I know you didn't ask, but synthetic doesn't cause leaks lol

I use this in my 2008 3.5 coupe and 2004 545i. No complaints other than the BMW takes 9 quarts of the stuff @ $10 per quart lmao

Sounds good, I guess I'll wait till the fall then. I'll shop around too to find out if it's cheaper to buy the synthetic stuff from a store (Walmart, etc...) rather than buying it directly from the dealership.

I just bought a 2012 3.5 SR coupe and will stick to conventional oil and go with a 5k change interval. Modern engines are more than capable of going 5k on conventional oil.Importantly, there's no significant/performance value for using synthetic oil in the Altima unless you just want a extend your oil change interval to 6k-7k.
