If you switch from conventional oil to synthetic oil and don't change oil until say 5000-7500 miles what kind of oil filter lasts that long between oil changes?

Thanks for any help

I think you are perfectly right to worry about the extended oil change.

If you look at al lot of "Oil-Guy" comments you will find that they recommend (for legal reasons) that you change the Synthetic oil at the same intervals you would with regular motor oil.

( Good for your engine but not so good for your wallet.)

Or, you could run the Syn, for the extended interval and change the Versa filter at the regular schedule. You would have to top up the total oil a touch to make up for the new, dry filter, but if you are concerned about the filter not lasting, that's an idea. If you see what it takes to get at the filter tho, you might change your mind.

Fram makes a 7500 mile oil filter that I use.

Where I come from, Fram is a 4-letter word......well you get the idea.

I'd go OEM for replacment filters, but in the end it's your wallet, not mine.

Edit: This is merely opinion based on a consensus of opinions of people more knowledgable than Ion the subject. I have no facts regarding filter performance.

I used K&N Gold oil filters with my Mobil 1 Synthetic. Mobil1 filters were not available here... just K&N, Purolator, Fram, and OEM.

fram holds the same 4 letter word down here too. Unforntunely for OEM filter, a while back i heard most of them were beoming made by Fram, so if that was true, i would stay away from OEM.

But to the orginally question, if you are only going up to 5-7k. and decent brand name should be fine. i plan to get some 15k oil, and most likely either change the filter every 5k or 7.5k and top off the oil. before this i remember using fram on my prelude for 5k without any issue, but to each his own.

I guess it's a matter of opinion. I've been using Fram filters since my dad taught me how to change oil when I was 5. He always them since they were easy to find at any store. I use them for the same reason, plus I like the grip of the filter (no more wrenches). After changing the oil in 4 family cars, 4 family trucks, the 2 cars and a truck that I've owned, neither on experienced any engine related problems. Most vehicles were pushing 180k before we sold them (when the doors fall off or you bust the rear axle, it's time to sell). I've heard tons of people say to me, "Oh you shouldn't use Fram. They are cheap and you'll have problems." But I find it funny that none of the people that say things like that have any valid personal experience to provide. It's more of "________ told me you shouldn't." Even if they did have a bad experience, my almost 20 years of unproblematic use easily supersedes their experience.

Though I wasn't using Fram on the V, because I wanted a longer-lasting filter to use with the synthetic oil, I'm kinda in the same boat as you. Myself and my father have used FRAM as long as I can remember. I still would probably use it if I were doing my own oil changes, since I don't autocross my DD anymore. What I've read about the filters leads me to believe that the "failures" that occur only occur under extreme driving conditions, that normal use of the filters likely will not ever see a problem.

So if you're driving the car like a normal person, and using dino oil, Fram is probably just fine.

However, this article is about synth, so I would reccommend a filter designed for the task.. K&N, Mobil1, doesn't Amsoil also make filters?

Amsoil makes filters too. They can be used up 15k when using other manufacturers oil or 25k when you use Amsoil oil.

Who do you use for oil changes? The store where you bought the K&N (ie. AutoZone)?

Fram does = [mostly] OEM.

Synthetic oild doesn't get dirty as fast as "regular" oil does . . . but if you don't change synthetic earlier you are going to push the same amount of sludge through teh engine, no?

In order to make a rea difference, use synthetic but change as often as you would with regular -- if you can afford it!

I'm doing it a bit different with my 2nd V. I go to a GM Goodwrench Quicklane and get mobil1... so it's done by a dealership with oem grade filters and mobil 1.
