I have been told that the 98' come with synthetic manual transmission fluid. What brand is the most recommended. I used "REDLINE" in my 1980 528i.Getting ready to replace seals in transmission, is it a good time to change oil the differential also. (97,000 miles on the clock)

i am not sure about the synthetic fluid being stock(doubt it). i will say that redline is good as is motul, mobil one, etc. IMPORTANT: m/t takes a gl-4 gear oil whereas diff takes a gl-5most gear oils you buy at the store are going to be gl-5(even the cheap stuff). gl-5 has special antiwear additives that corrode synchros. SOLUTION: us redline mt90 in your m/t and some other stuff(like easily obtainable mobil one) in the diff.

I was hoping for this type of reply. I will continue to request Redline MTL for the transmission. And the 5gl for the diff. (bought that thing new back in '98 - and its been a sweet ride). I hope to keep it that way.Much Thanks...

i have "heard" that the mtl is too light. some racing teams have stopped using it for that reason. thats why i use mt90. i hear that motul gear 400(i think thats the number) is the best.
