I have a 2004 Frontier crew cab 4X4 auto and was wondering about switching the transfer case and differential oils to synthetic. What would everyone recommend? I`m in Canada and our summers are warm but our winters temps are usually around 10-15 F with regular drops to 0.

It would be a good choice. Mobil 1 or Valvoline full synthetic 80w90 GL5 would work in both the diffs and Tcase.

Auto equipped trucks typically use ATF in the Tcase. Switching to gear oil is a good idea on these.

But be careful with this one, you should ask the advices of the experts or just ask someone form the truck's manufacturer. These can cause serious problem to your car.

Synthetics will not cause any problems with his...ahem....truck.

I lead an Arizona 4x4 club and literally know hundreds of Nissan Truck owners, many whom have made the switch. I run synthetics myself as well with no issues.

It's hard to cause problems with a superior lubricant provided you're using the right grade of oil for your application.

Royal Purple is considered by many to offer the best gear synthetic gear lubes. I use 75w-90 Mobil 1 gear oil in my differential and transmission and they work great.

Personally, I run 5w30 in my axles as well, for less parasitic loss, and don't tell me I'm wrong, because its not an opinion, its a fact Jack.

Nissan recommends either their brand of automatic transmission fluid or GL4 75w85 or 75w90 gear oil in the transfer case. But you should be able to use synthetic in either. According to some tests by Amsoil, Royal Purple is not that good of a gear oil. From my research it looks like Amsoil and Redline make the best gear oils. Both Amsoil and Redline make synthetic GL4 gear oils and synthetic AFT. I put Amsoil Sever Gear 75W110 in my differential, but I live in a warmer climate. You may want to use a 75W90 for the differential. The heavier oils protect better but may reduce mpg, but I haven't noticed any difference in mpg with the 75W110. A 75W90 gear oil is about the same thickness as a 10w40 motor oil. So that suggestion about using 5w30 isn't as bad as some comments suggested. Here is a link where ATF and gear oil are discussed: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/...age=1

I'm bumping this thread because it has been torturing my soul for some time now. If you go up a few posts you will see my idiotic and abusive rant. I just want to say that at the time, I had just gotten the internet for the first time in my life, and that someone had an idea different from mine so I f***ed up.

I can't go on like this with some people knowing how I acted. I even think a few Nico members have grudges against me because of this.

My attitude has changed since then and I no longer care if my point doesn't get across, which I feel is an important thing for anyone on the internet to grasp.

Now I can clear my conscience because I have totally shown everyone what I have done even though I don't know that something bad won't happen. The beating of the telltale heart can finally stop.

Wow - if that's been eating at you for over a year you haven't put your foot in your mouth nearly as much as I have! I think my worst one was asking a girl at a party if she had a cold because her voice sounded hoarse... when she informed me that she had damaged her throat in a serious rollover accident, I proceded to announce what a dumbass I was to the whole room full of people and b**** at the guy who invited her (and knew) for not warning me. Real smooth... tequila was involved - but still, real smooth.

In any case I'm glad to see you're still hanging out here.

I actually broke down and bought genuine Nissan MTF for my Frontier after beating my head against the wall trying to find the "correct" fluid as recommended in the owner's manual. It was just easier...
