my third gear syncro is a little screwed and i'd like to know how to fix it. if i do a lot of rev matching i can shift it smooth all day but since i have the stock flywheel it takes far too long before i can slap it in gear. and at this point i don't even need the clutch. it just takes too long and too much work. if i regularly shift third there is a little grindage then it pops right in. so how can i fix the grinding. can i get just a new syncro put in or should i consider a whole new transmission. and if you have any idea how expensive.

i searched but didn't find what i was lookin for, sorry if this has been gone over allready. thanks~ben

You *could* get the transmission rebuilt, but it's gonna cost a lot. Can't give you exact #'s, but I can guarantee it's going to be more than a low mileage used transmission.

You might want to try changing your transmission fluid and see if that helps. Some folks around here swear by Redline products.

You can buy the gear kit. Those are generally $6k+ from what I've seen from Greddy, OS Giken, HKS, etc. Very expensive to upgrade to a 6spd from a 5spd. Then you can take it to a transmission shop to have them install the new stuff.

Replacing the synchros is really a simple task. I need to do it myself but i was waiting until i had a reason to drop the transmission (i.e. clutch or flywheel install). As long as the gears themselves aren't chipped or anything then, yes, all you would have to do is replace the synchros. What wears out is generally the little teeth on the inside of the synchro that bite down on the hub. They should be sharp and pronounced but if you pulled them they would probably all be worn down.

Basically when you pull the transmission apart, its just a bunch of gears on a few shafts with some synchros and thrust washers here and there. Remember where everything goes and the job is a piece of cake.

Even if you don't go with something pricey like Redline, some fresh fluid might do some good. Search around here on NICO, there've been some good discussions about the various choices.

It would suck to drop a ton of money on transmission fluid and still have the thing shift like ****.

BTW, make sure whatever you buy is safe to use with our synchros.

You'll note that the Redline MT-90 and MTL specifically mention low corrosivity.
