I think my syncrozes are shot. My shifter wont stay in 1st or 2nd without me holdin it in gear. How hard is this to fix and how would i go about fixin this? Thanks in advance.

syncros help match the speed of the two gears so they mesh together instead of grinding, you might want to search on how to remove your shifter(search for post on short shifter) and see if the little bushing on the bottom of your shifter is messed up...check this outhttp://www.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=20192 just a guess though.

yeah, synchros only help shifting gears. good idea bout chekin da bushing, maybe the shift boot is binding?

When the gears start wearing down it wont stay in gear. not the right answer but it could be that.

Al the gears in a transmission stay meshed. Wear will not cause a transmission to pop out of gear. And I'fd have a hard time seeing the dogs wear out to the point they would ever fall out. It would just simply have a hard time engaging the gear at all. But they are rather robust and would be difficult to wear down under reasonably normal use(not grinding the dogs trying to get into each gear all the time). I believe each gear has a detent-like mechanism to hold the car in gear. This may be worn out.
