Couldn't find too much on this. The honda community tends to be a fan of it, especially if your grinding. Ive seen mixed reviews from the nissaners that use it, which it doesnt seem like to many of us do. I have 3 bottles of it (penzoil, but GM is the same) No grinds, but should I use it. I dont want to make somethin thats fine turn bad, but I do need to change my MT oil.

So lets make this the yes its good or no its bad and dont use it and why thread. And if you "heard" from your friends moms long lost son that its good or bad, state that you just heard its good or bad.

Also, does our trannies have "yellow metals" its supposed to be designed for trannies with yellow metals. thanks.

Yes, brass. The additives in some gear oils will corrode synchros.

And, I've never used Synchromesh, but from what I can decipher from it, it's too thin.

I've been running penzoil synchromesh in my 240's transmission for going on 3 years and 50k miles now and it shifts smoothly every time... so yeah... I had regular valvoline gear oil in my transmission before and I would grind second gear on cold cold mornings. With the synchromesh it works perfectly. So that's my 2 cents.

alright we're gettin somewhere here.

at least now I know the syncromesh's "good for trannies with yellow metals" quality is compatable.

I also heard it is a rather thin gear oil, I also need to check if its GL 4 or GL 5, we require GL 4. If I had grinds I would use it no doubt, but im still grind free.

Here's some data from manufacturers:

http://www.pzlqs.com/Tech/Pdsh...d.PDF

http://www.redlineoil.com/pdf/6.pdf

http://www.royalpurple.com/prodsa/mgeara.html

And a good page to explain how viscosity is rated:

http://www.wearcheck.com/liter...7.htm

Edit: So, if I'm reading the data correctly, Synchromesh seems awfully thin compared to the stuff people commonly use in a KA transmission, like Redline MT90. I *think* Nissan recommends a 75w90 gear oil, but I'd double check the FSM on that.

Just FYI - The honda guys an every other brand of cars which track race often are reffering to *Sychromesh - Friction Modified*

If it doesnt say FRICTION MODIFIED on it you have the cheapo stuff which does nothing to help your transmission issues or help prevent them. The only place you can get it is the GM or Chevy dealers as it is used as oem fluids for Z06 corvettes. Costs anywhere from 12.00 per quart to 20.00 per quart.

friction modified is used for those honda guys with LSDs. No LSD they usually go with the normal syncromesh. its not the cheap stuff its just designed for different applications.

if you want it, you can get it at autozone. The two near me have it, if they dont ask about it. They sell Penzoil Syncromesh, not GM syncromesh. however both are the same. Penzoil = $6 a quart, GM you can get through the dealership at $12+ a quart.

If I had a grind I would put it in in a heartbeat.

after thinkin about it @ $15 for my syncromesh, which I already purchased adn doubt i can find someone to sell it to. Or another $35 for Redline. its a 91, transmission is fine, 160k miles, I dont think its worth it to spend all that on redline. I'll probably end up swapping it out for an sr in the spring time. In the end it woudl cost me $50 for transmission fluid change if you think about the fact that i have syncromesh on the shelf thats never goin to be used.

Unless someone strongly opposes to a good transmission using syncromesh, speak up, or its goin in. either that or some regular correct weight gl 4 gear oil.

I used the penzoil version "exact same as GMs brand" in my 4th gen civic, and never had any problems from the transmission. I intend to put it in the 240 when I swap to manual... Got mine at Autozone, the stock number is 3501 for the quart size... They only had 2 quarts when I got mine, they had to order more on request...

My mechanic from the nissan dealer told me that from the factory, they use real thin oil, almost like a 60W. Many times, the dealer will use just 2 qts regular gear oil, and the rest ATF. Dont know if I would personally do that, puts that what they use if your car gets serviced by Nissan.

I had a grind in 2nd and 5th. Regular Penzoil cured it. I still think that it is too thin to be very durable, though.
