Here comes the shocker... I think my synchros are going. *Gasp.* Here's the question:

Can synchros be replaced? Or is the whole tranny toast?

Any write ups?

Thanks guys

They can be replaced and if you have the factory manual it goes through doing it. You just need to find the new syncros. and if you do rebuild it yourself make sure you check all the bearings and replace anything questionable.

its realyl not near as confusing as it originally works... if you understand and have seen the inside of a transmission before its really not a huge deal to replace the syncros... ive never done it in my z but i have done it... first glance knowing nothign im like what are all these gears??? then look a little more a read a lil and it gets alot more simple lol

You have come to the right place. Yes, synchros can be replaced. The car I am restoring for my daughter would not shift into 3rd or 4th when we got it. I cracked the tranny apart and there was a broken 3rd-4th gear shift fork that was caused by a circlip letting go on the end of the rod the fork rides on (called a striker rod I think.)Anyway, it is fairly easy to rebuild your transmission, but you have to have some heavy duty gear pullers, and a big vise is a necessity to make the job go easier. The transmission comes apart basically in 3 pieces. I replaced the 3rd-4th gear synchro, 3rd-4th gear shift fork, the striker rod, the clip, all the bearings, and all the seals in mine for about $300 in parts. There is a step by step on how to do it in the online z32 service manual. It is posted on several different sites, google it and it should be easy to find. I bought my parts from Courtesy Nissan http://www.courtesyparts.com/

Piece of cake!

Any ideas on where I could buy new synchros? I've never done this before, but I'm very mechanically inclined and with a good DIY thread I think i"ll be ok

Courtesy Parts in Richardson TX. I linked it in my post. Great service, good prices, and fast shipping.

I found an online parts breakdown, can't remember the address, but it was like a .au address or .uk something like that. (Google it, it is out there somewhere) It had a breakdown of the tranny and all the parts. I noted all the part numbers for the parts I needed and then went to courtesy's site and punch them all into the order pad and it pulled them all up and I ordered them right then. I really thought it was going to be a hassle to get the parts, but it was nothing.
