symptoms of bad MAF???

ok last night im driving home from the shop that i work on my car at...i was running no filter for a few weeks when i drivin it( i know stupid!!! ) but i finally put a filter on it yesterday morning...

well i was drivin home with the timing advanced a little just to go home and what not...well right before i get to my house i get on it a little...and when i get to the stop sign it starts idleing really wierd( like i have a boost leak or where an intercooler piping blows off) like 1000rpms then 200...all the way home i had to go at like 2 grand in 1st cause after that it would just not do anything...Sounded like i had a two step on it or something when i would try to go at a higher rpm...

what u guys think! IM SICK OF THESE PROBLEMS!! and yes...that was all caps! lol!..

You do know that MAFS are REAL sensitive right? You might have damaged it without the filter, probably got something in it.

yeah...do u think that is why my timing had to be advanced to run right? b/c the maf was throwing something else off??...

and does that sound like the problem?

Might have something to do with the timing but not too sure on that.

i broke my old mafs on my old ka and it did the same thing and it shot out black smoke...cost me $615 from the dealership to fix...

I had a MAF go on me before. It'd sputter while driving and shooting out black smoke from the exhaust. Not all the time, but here and there. It was pretty much like you explained. It drove like it had a real bad vacuum leak.

My clutch fan seized and cut my MAF signal wire (obviously not your problem)and i experienced the same symptoms. check that your MAF sensor didn't get damaged,from driving w/o a filter. clean or replace if needed. That should help

My sr20det starts up but it cant idle on its own and when i rev it to 5k rpm, it just bogs out and doesnt go any further, sometimes it doesnt even go past 3k rpm... help me out!!!

is it bouncing back from 1000 to 200 than back again? if this is the case, check your vacuum lines.

Also for the idling, try cleaning out your IACV.

nope it doesn't even idle on its own.in order for the motor to stay on i have to give it gas!!!!but when i release the gas the whole car just shuts off..i tried to adjust timing and still no progress.

Is it blowing black smoke, and when you give it gas does it feel like there is a rev-limiter at 2500 rpm or so, shakeing when it idles if so i would check your maf for cleanliness or if it is getting a signal properly, maybe the resistor on the maf sensor itself wore out. Is your MAF installed b4 or after your turbo. If it is after the sensor is taking abuse from trying to meter boosted air.Which i hear can cause premature failure even thought the car supposedly runs more effeciently, not sure on that part.

try 240sxmotoring.com they are about $175 great people too...or you could go to yor local junk yard...im sure they can't be that bad of a price there, unfortunately the parts don't look like much usually cost the most G/L

thx. i found one at a junkyard but i just hope the plug in is the same as mine, or i could had one for free from a friend with the ka-e engine but plugs were different.

If you cant go over 2500 rpm then either the MAF or the wirring for it.try to find someone that will let you test their Working MAF on your car to see if thats your problem first.
