I have a redtop in my 95. When the car is cold and with an ambient temp of less than say 70, the car runs good for about 20 minutes. If its cool out, after 25 minutes, the car gets weak, like it is stumbling, I have put in new plugs and tried other coils. Now that its hot, 85+ degrees, the symptoms have changed.

Now it can have trouble idling right from start up. It's never died but it shakes and thumps. It goes just fine and clears up for the most part if you hit the gas.

It also sometimes sounds like it is a flat four, real lumpy like a motorcycle is going by or a Subaru with loud exhaust. Its weak when it makes this noise. That will randomly clear up with no change in throttle position or anything else.

Also randomly it gets to be its worst. The motor will surge and stumble and fairly regularly backfire. That randomly comes and goes.

Regardless of how it is running the turbo can be heard spooling so I'm less likely to blame it or any power loss.

Sounds like it could be the water temp sensor. Download the FSM and follow the procedure on how to test the sensor.

It also sounds like you have a misfire issue as well if you say it sounds like a Suby.

I'm interested to hear that since there was a problem with the SR20 water sensor. It made the dash gauge read hot as can be. Switching to the KA sensor brought gauge back down, is it not a compatible part? Thanks for the input.

as far as the temop sensore is concerned...they read temp differently. one read in celcius (SR) and the other reads in feirinheigt (KA) the 240 gauge cluster reads in (F) so a (F) sensor is used alot to correct the problem..as for the misfire one by one whil the engine is running disconnect the injectors one at a time to see if you can isolate a dead cylinder or a lazy injector. check your plugs to see if there is one that is darker than normal
