The engine can do more, but the cvt cannot. It can only spin so fast without failing or overheating!

Not necessarily, It depends on how long the stroke is. The Ferrari Enzo's V12 redlines at 8200 rpm, while the 4 cylinder of the Altima Coupe redlines at 6000 rpm. Torque numbers are comparatively higher in cars with lower redlines, because of the longer stroke pattern. Think of it like a pogo stick. The more effort you give going down, the more power that is created to launch you up, however, the method is slower than a short, quick, bounce.
