hey fellas, its been a while. anyhow, i was thinking today. ive only changed my oil twice since ive had the car. i've put roughly 7k miles on the car since ive owned it. first it had redline oil, and there was zero issues. then i put amsoil full synthetic in it the last time around. after i put in the amsoil, the car started to puff smoke when i let off the gas. ive never put synthetic in any of my cars, but i have a feeling the valve seals shrunk (unless i have it backwards), resulting in burnt oil. it doesnt puff on start up, only when i drive it. every other car i've owned has gotten penzoil 10-30. i was thinking about going back to the reg stuff. i'd imagine my motor was on dyno oil back in japan, although i cant be sure. im just looking for opinions. i dont want to destroy all my seals or anything. i havnt noticed any external leaks, just the puffing when i let off the gas. i cant see it, but boy can i smell it. burnt penzoil is the WORST smell ive ever experienced.

anyhow, thanks for readin. input?

IMO, the real advantage to using synthetic is that its more resistant not to coke up the feed lines and center section of your turbo.

Redline is full synthetic as far as I know.

it is full synthetic. maybe i'll try switching back to redline. the only reason i went with amsoil, is because its easy to get at the local parts store. amsoil is supposed to help combat smoke, but honestly, i cant take the smell. i can live with it puffing a little smoke, but the smell is seriously nasty. i should just have it checked out.. i havnt checked the compression because im lazy as crap. but im hoping for it to be the valve seals. it doesnt stumble upon start or anything. infact, i started it the other day for the first time since mid october, and it started with 4 cranks. i was in utter shock! no stumbles or anything, just oil smell and some smoke. initially, i thought it was the stock turbo. but that thing is long gone and the problem persists. am i off assuming that it had dyno oil in it for most of its life?

It smokes when you left off the gas after accelerating? There is a possibility that your intake valve seals are worn out and causing the leak. Under heavy vacuum they will leak if they are bad. Generally you will smoke for 4 reasons. Bad turbo seals, bad intake valve seals, or bad rings, or bad head gasket.

Redline oil is very good s***, and royal purple isnt bad either. AMS oil isnt as great as it used to be, and penzoil is probably the worst oil you can put in a car period. I wouldnt put penzoil in door joints.

It has way too many additives in it, and the additives packages in the oil wear out extremely fast, causing sludge build up, oxidation, and scoring of internal components. I've worked at several dealerships and several different auto makes, cars that have been running penzoil for a long time and have had normal 3000 to 5000 mile internvals with over 100k miles on them look like someone put mud into their engine and drove it like that until oil pressure problems developed or it started knocking.

Penzoil might be a good oil to use if you lived a 100 percent dirt and dust free area and changed your oil once a week.

From what I've read on NASIOC since I've owned my WRX is M1 5w-30 has caused a good deal of stock/bpu boxer engines to spin bearings, and start to have piston slap issues.

Right now I have a good knocking noise coming from my engine that has 110k on it. (its not lifter tap, or crank knock) Its whole life until 100k when the noise started it has had M1 5w-30 ran in it.... Then I switched. I'll find out in a few days after I change my timing belt if its piston slap or not if the noise goes away.

From what I've been reading M1 has been getting a nice
