my g/f and i noticed a smell of the syrup type under the hood today. there is no white smoke out of the exhaust, it doesn't smell like that back there, and the car runs fine. no signs of leaks anywhere except for the connector i put in to bypass the heater core. i did recently take the turbo off and coolant dripped onto the turbo and the crossmember below..could this be the source of the smell?

Sounds like you probably answered your own question. Just double check again for any leaks and check your exhaust to see if there's a sweet smell coming out of there too.

Its coolant if it smells sweet, unless you left cake under your hood.

You're leaking coolant somewhere. No white smoke doesn't mean your coolant system is fine.

Coolent.

unless you just put some in and spilled it... I would be checking for the leak. Its never a good thing to lose fluid. Kind of like you being dehydrated isnt a good thing either.

^ I agree with him. IF you were smoking white, then you would likely have a blown headgasket. Which is bad but not the only possible problem.

When I first finished my swap I had spilt some coolant on my radiator and for the first week I kept smelling coolant and I could see the rad smoking. It finally all burnt off and now no more smell

i do have a small coolant leak where i bypassed the heater hose and had spilled a bunch on the crossmember during my turbo removal..i just want to make sure that white smoke, "milky" oil, oily coolant, and "greenish" spark plugs are the only signs of a blown head gasket...

may not notice the leak idling but under some pressure it could be steaming out or dripping. Buddy thought it would be funny to swap out my glass of mountain dew with coolant. brought it up to my mouth before i noticed there weren't any carbonation bubbles in it. I HATE flat soda with a passion and would never drink flat dew and getting that close to it could definitely smell the sweetness.

isn't antifreeze bad? like it would kill you if you drank too much?It does taste sweet though, I was pressure testing an old MG and the pump popped off and I got a nice face full of antifreeze.Maybe check freeze plugs, Good luck

Haha I remember when I was pulling my KA and the hoses at the back of the bay were still connected and I went to disconnect them while there was tension on the line and once it was loose it popped and splashed my eyes and I got a taste of it too.
