Personally, I wouldn't get a roll of teflon tape anywhere near any of my drain plugs. I've never heard of using tape on a drain plug, and I worked at a shop for nearly 10 years. The plug should have a crush washer that provides the seal, replace that if it is leaking at the drain plug. It may be the case that moving to a dryer climate caused your seals to dry up a bit and start cracking, which would lead to the leaks. But, I'd just chalk it up to a coincidence. The only good way to stop a seal from leaking is to replace it.
