Sadly, it appears that I am going to have to drop the motor in my '92 Q45 in order to change the transmission, contrary to what the FSM led me to believe. If I'm going to go to all that trouble, I would prefer to do everything that I can that would be easier with the motor out of the engine bay. Any suggestions on additional tasks that I should undertake would be most welcome. I already have changing the chain guides on the list.

Rear seal, 3rd motor (transmission) mount, two front engine mounts, drop oil pan and remove crud, turbine speed sensor, VC gaskets and hoses are a lot easier.

You don't have to drop the engine to remove the transmission. You do have to have a very long extension for the top bolts on the bell housing.

Thanks for the input. I shall be replacing the motor mounts and cleaning out the oil pan, but hadn't thought of the rear seal or the turbine sensor.

You say that I just need a very long extension to remove the top bell housing bolts - I tried to remove the transmission a couple of weekends ago and quite honestly, I couldn't see how to fit my hand up there, let alone a wrench. Also, it took a three foot long breaker bar to free the lower four bolts. How on earth does one free the upper ones without dropping the motor? And more importantly, how does one re-torque them upon reassembly?

Also, plenum hoses, knock sensors, fuel injectors. front seal and spark plugs. Also install real oil pressure gauge by tapping oil pressure sender.
