Does anyone know what kind of problems I am likely to encounter swapping an R33 RB25DET auto trans engine with an R32 RB20DET manual trans? It looks like the next shipment of clips from a company I've contacted, are going to be auto transmission equipped R33's. The chassis that I want to make the swap in is a '95 MT S-14. I'm not sure yet if the instrument cluster is included in the R33 clip, or not. They offered to throw in an R32 RB20DET manual transmission with the clip. I'm thinking I should probably steer away from this deal. What do you think?

Thanks in advance, Randy

I got an R32 RB25DET manual trans and the only problem I have so far is that the speed sensor is mechanical (cable) where the R33 is electric so I dont have a speedo, but I will fix all that later (how I am not quite sure). I am not sure about the RB20 trans but if it bolts up, I see no problems....

I was told the same thing by venus but i think its going to be more trouble than its worth

you have to deal with

flywheelclutchECUspeed sensor

those are the things i thought of off the top of my head origionally when they told me the 2200$...

Jon how do you have an R32 RB25DET transmission?I'm 99% sure the R32 skyline was only gts(RB20DET) and GTR(RB26DETT) plus the awd sedan(RB20DET)

also the main issue is the rb20 trans wont be good If you want to do mods to the engine as the rb20 is only really good for 300-350 and defiatly forget flat shiftingit will bolt up and you will need a different drive shaft yoke as well.If you plan on keeping the motor stockish ie stock turbo cooleretc and not much boost you could get away with it but if your chasing 400 hp forget it.how do i know cause I have a friend inthe same position here in aus but the rb 20 gear boes are a fair bit cheaper than the rb25 onesmeggala

I thought so also but I was told by the guy I bought the clip frm that it was R32 RB25DET. There is always a chance that I got screwed and got an RB20DET trans but if I did it fit up real nice.

just pull the old speed sensor out and slide it into the 25 transmission takes 5 minutes and you can use your stock speedo.

ok what about an ECU?

will the auto ecu run the 5speed without any problems?

and Jost, did venus say it was a CLIP with rb20 transmission or a MOTORSET with rb20 transmission?

The speed sensor wont fit. I also tried the sensor off the auto trans but that wont fit either. I wish it was that easy and a 5 minute job. I also wired up the RB gauges so I have the oil temp and the boost gauge. I also have the exhaust temp warning light. I just thought that the RB gauges would be better since they show what Nissan wanted you to watch so I made them work except the speedo.

I TRIED IT, IT DOESNT!!!! It may drop into an RB25DET trans, but I think I got screwed and was sent an RB20DET trans. BELIEVE ME I TRIED IT!!!. Besides I switched to the RB gauges and I am not too sure that it would work with the new speedo anyway. If you would like I will take a picture of the sensor not fitting so you will believe me.

The speed sensor from a 93 manual 240SX bolted directly into my RB20 transmission. I've been using it for a few weeks now with 0 problems.

However, the speed sensor from my 90 auto 240 would not work. It was too big for the hole. I'm not sure if it's because I had an auto or maybe they changed the speed sensors when they changed to DOHC. Either way a VSS from a 91-93 manual 240 should work, and one from an 89 or 90 manual may work. If you'd like I can take pictures of my speedometer going down the road and of the sensor bolted in to the RB20 transmission.

Jon, see.

im telling you, its possible.

did you try to use the KAe sensor? or a 91+ senor?

and back to my other questions,ECU, will an auto ecu have any problems running a manual trans?JOST, was it a clip or motorset?

I used my 89 S13 manual sensor and the R33 Auto sensor. Neither worked.

Kamin,

Sorry about not responding quicker. I've been away for a few days, busy you know. Venus told me they had a front clip coming from an R33 RB25DET. But it has an automatic transmission. They would include a manual transmission from an RB20. They didn't know if it would work, and to ask a mechanic. You guys are my "mechanic". Thanks.

no problem Jost, my source with venus told me it was a motorset but wasnt 100% sure if that was right.
