my rings in my current motor are blown. i have another spare block thats been sitting in my backyard for the last 8 months... ive put this car on hold for too long now so an idea popped in my head. why not just pull the rings from the spare motor and swap them into my current motor? has anyone done this? what is the process i should take when doing this?

why not just use the whole spare block...seems easier

spare block as been sitting outside for 8 months. no oil pan, or anything. just a piece of tarp covering the top of the block to make sure no water gets into the cylinder walls. im pretty sure the whole block can be used if i get it hot tanked and replaced some seals...etc.. but im out of $$ and i need to get my car out of the yard.

detonation causes ringlands to break? im just hoping if its just the rings. if it is will swapping rings be possible?

usually its ring lands that go on KA. if you have pretty low compression and motor runs like absolute asscrack, then its most likely ring lands.

what was your air fuel ratios in WOT and also how much timing were you retarding/lb of boost with the BTM?

what octane fuel did you use and how much boost were u running when it messed up?

back then it ran with a 12:1 fmu with no wideband sensor to read. i ran stock timing with 8psi of boost. 91 octane piss gas here in CA. outside temps were around 95 degrees...

its your pistons that are probably broken (ring langds), not the rings themselves.

+1 foir ring lands...the rings are stout...the actual pistons are weak.

Now, that's not to say you can't swap the whole piston and ring setup from the other motor...ASSUMING theyu're are the correct grade piston (1, 2, or 3).

Easy decision really, I'm so smart somtimes. Both motors have to be apart fpr the ring swap...so why not just swap over the whole rod/piston combo from the spare block.

I almost always brake the rings pulling them off and old piston anyway. you could make it even easier and swap over the whole rotating assembly. I've seen it done on an RB20, I know its ghetto, but it works.

back in the days my crx motor blew and I just got another used piston and slapped it in just to get her running, no bore hone or nothing. Needless to say it smoked a little but the car still ran.

^Thats my plan. I have four rod/piston assemblies here. Once I pop a piston, I'm swapping and then its time to build an engine. Maybe a lil less boosting after I swap, but hey, I'll have transportation.

first, take the rods/pistons out of your blown motor. if the cylinder walls look good, just re-hone them. a honer cost like $22.00 at sears. third buy a new set of rings from partsdinosaur.com ($37.00). youll also need a set of ring spreaders ($7.00), and a ring compressor ($7.00)-also from sears. theres a write up on ka-t.org about how to properly file fit the rings in the hall of fame section.....presto!!, your short block is as good as new for under $100

i just pulled the head off the motor thats been sitting. there looks like a lil scoring on top of the pistons where the piston bent the valves. is that still good to use? other than that everything else looks clean
