Yes, by all means keep your original odometer.
The odometer circuit is separate from the speedo and tach circuits. All you need to do is swap out your speedo and tach (if those are the things that stopped working.) Swapping those parts are very straightforward. Removing your cluster might be a PITA if it's your first time.
Oh and also verify that your tach is the DOHC version.
