swapping a bellhousing on a KA transmission and theres a gasket for the front cover which is in the bellhousing, goes over the shaft w/ spline, do i need that gasket or can I use a gasket maker and be ok? i dont want to take a chance because thats not a good place to have transmission fluid leaking into.

You mean that rectangular plate thing that has the spline coming out of it and the bell housing? Just go buy a new oem gasket. Those seem to last a good long time.
