i picked up a 300zx VLSD from the junk yard and tried putting it on my 240 but the axles were to long...is it possible to swap the internals from the z32 vlsd into the the open diff of the s13?

supposedly it can be done. i havent done it myself but my buddy's car it has been done. as long as the shaft slines and shaft lengths are right you should be good. kinda like a ford rearend with checy driveshaft ya know. but keep looking. good luck. i'm thinkin bout the same thing

In order to swap the internals into a non-vlsd housing you have to have the proper stub shafts which you have, but the axle flanges are the 5 bolt pattern instead of the 6 bolt pattern. There are 2 ways to solve this problem. First you can aquire a set of 6 bolt stub shafts, but you will have a hard time finding them anywhere other than the dealer and they cost about $300-400. the alternative would be to find a pre-'96 infiniti j30 at the junkyard and use the axles out of it. The flanges are 5 bolt just like the 300zx and the length is the same as the stock 240. Also, the splines on the hub end are the same and will fit. I went that route on my vlsd swap and I can verify it does work. Also, the 5 bolt axles themselves are stronger and can take 450+ hp so if you ever go turbo you have plenty of assurance

p.s. this only works with a non-turbo z32 diff. the turbo z32 diff is a lot bigger and physically will not fit without some custom modifications plus the turbo diff has a much taller set of gears in it

the turbo 300z diff is a r230, non turbo is a r200, get the axle shafts from a q45 or j30, this only works if you have the spread out 6 bolt pattern
