I have a 20z out of an 81ish 720 that i dropped in my 83. I was going to swap in a newer distributor from what i think was an 85, but the ignition modules are different. My old one is a three wire, the newer one from the 85 is a 4 wire. Just one extra wire...the other three are the same as the old distributor. I couldn't really find a 100% accurate diagram on shopkey for the newer distributor, but it looks like the newer wire goes to the ecm under the drivers seat.

You guys think it will work? i wold swap ignition modules, but they bolt in a different way between the two distributors.

btw, the whole reason i swapped was to gain use of the later and more common cap and rotor....should have just paid the extra $15 for the 81 cap and rotor

Frankendizzy on a Z20? I think the z20 and z24 are closer in design then the z22. so you should be good using some z20 parts on a z24.

The distributor came from a carbed or fuel injected engine. If its from an injected engine then yes, it goes to the ECU, if its from a carbed engine it goes to one of the vacuum switching valves and could be deleted.

both engines are carb'ed.

I made a typo...engine i have is a z22....took the distributor out of a z24.

Anyway, makes sense that the extra wire would be a signal to kill the second plugs or something along those lines related to emissions.

Either way, the rest of the stuff i need to get it running comes in tomorrow so we shall find out this weekend...ill report back

well, i got it running today....

with the z24 distributor. I just left the extra wire off. After turning the distributor some, killing a battery, getting a replacement, and fixing the terminals....it fired up. Runs OK, i need to set base timing and figure out why it falls on its face when i hit the throttle, even with no load.

I think i have a fuel supply problem....

But yes, swapping the distributors works! good way to get rid of that obsolete cap and rotor if you have an older engine...
