Ok, I'm in the process of purchasing a digital cluster and HUD off of here. However, the digital cluster I'm buying is out of an '89 (SOHC). I, on the other hand, own a '91 fastback (DOHC)....

I've been researching about the compatability of the cluster in question with my car. And I keeping reading the same thing: "swap the tach".

What does everyone mean by that? I thought the tach was just the gauge I'm reading RPMs off of? If the tach don't work, how is swapping the gauge face gonna fix anything? I'm sure its more than just the gauge in this case, but I'm lost.

The reason I think this is because when looking for this DOHC tach on here, other forums, or even ebay, all I see are just gauge faces...

So please guys, help a bro out. What does everyone mean?..

They mean swapping the WHOLE tachometer unit, not just the face. You'll have to swap the WHOLE assembly. I would suggest just finding a dohc hud cluster and using that so you aren't dealing with itty bitty fragile plastics that are 20 years old. Also, because you're gonna need another cluster (out of a dohc) for parts. So why not just save ALL the hassle (and possibility of ruining both clusters) and get a dohc hud cluster?

It's easy to find bad digital cluster, so buy that one cheap, take the tachometer out and move it to the working digital cluster or you can take out the digital display unit out of current and move to the DOHC cluster. Whatever you do, difficulty is 1-2 out of 10 job.

Swapping a tach is EASY EASY EASY. Three screws, seriously.

Well, my plan was to buy a bunch of them, working or not, one for actual use and the rest for parts. But it looks like my first purchase is a working unit out of a SOHC '89.

Again, I'm down for buying broke units, but don't know where to look. I've been combing the classifieds under interior, electronics, and part-outs. I've only found the one I'm about to purchase. No one mentions non-working clusters around here. Ebay doesn't have anything right now. I hesitated last week, and the unit for sale there has been sold.

Oh, and thanks for the speedy responses, guys...
