i have a 1986 NA nissan 300zx. I wanna do a swap with a turbo engine. I was told that the engine will come with the manifold and all i need to do the swap with. Intercooler not needed on Z31. Will i need to get a new exhaust system to go along with the swap as well as boost meter? or are these just recommended?

if you do a rb swap, don't waist time with the rb20. get an rb25 or 26. anyway, the exhaust on my turbo Z is 2.5 inches from factory, so you may want to go ahead and upgrade. as far as the ic, you don't need one unless you plan to run 12psi or more. you do need a boost meter.

I would personally never listen to the advice of someone who isn't capable of spelling simple words like "YOUR" and "YOU". I especially wouldn't listen to the advice of someone who thinks an RB20 is a better motor than a VG30. But that's just me....

In Japan, the RB20DET that came in the Z31 put out 20hp less than the VG30ET. As far as drivability of a VG30ET, the motors are great. Many people are running them with 200k miles on the original motor. Some have replaced the turbos. Most have gone through a few clutches. But the only people who seem to have problems with them are the 16 year olds who try running 18+ psi. (coincidently, they also use the words "UR" and "U" )

Anyway, if you're serious about a trubo swap, there are a few things to know.- You don't HAVE to swap the whole motor. - An engine will come with what it comes with. No guarantees on the manifold.- An intercooler never came with the stock VG30ET, so if you do the whole block, you won't need it until you raise the boost.- A boost meter is essential if you ever plan on raising boost. Unless you like blowing stuff up.- You don't NEED a full exhaust, but if you keep the NA exhaust, you'll be choking the motor.- You will need the downpipe that runs from the turbo to the cat at the very least.

you will also need the crossmember to get it to fit. I did a swap, and didn't change the crossmember and had to pull the engine back out. The turbo is in the way of the n/a mount.

+1 for the VG30 being a better engine than the RB20, I'm a fan of the inlines but not a fan of loosing displacement, and for the record AZ-Z bum is something of anb authority so pay attention to his responce

Ok. Thanks. I'm not doing the swap myself. I know a mechanic who will do it and give me a good price. I just needed to know what other parts I would need. I'm gonna put a complete cat back exhaust and I was also thinking about adding a blowoff valve. (I think they're cool). But now I'll also plan on getting the boost meter. What happened was my father was driving the car. It was stock NA. Some how the engine got overheated (I think). He thinks the engine is messed up for good. He thinks the engine is warped and it would be worth it just do do a swap. I want more horsepower so I'm looking for a turbo. I just waant to make sure that it's not a bad idea before i put my plans into action. Any input or comments would be appreciated. Thanks!
