I'm about to put a 2011 M56 motor and tranny in my 07 M45. I'll be sure to keep notes of any issues as well as what will work
and what will not. I'll have the help of Paul & Brennan from the FB Group, so this is gonna be kinda interesting.

Congrats on the big, brave leap!
I understand why you were burned out on the 4.5 though.

Best of luck

Yeah I'm like WTH! I put in another 4.5 two weeks ago and still have this complete 5.6 sitting here. The first 5.6 i got was water damaged but after putting in the 4.5
another 5.6 came available with low miles and after dry/wet compression testing, this one is solid! So i've made up my mind to
go ahead and give it a shot.

This sounds pretty interesting. I have been wanting to put a newer, higher gear count trans in my car for a while. The spacing is just too far apart for great performance in my old 5 speed. I hope all goes well, Id like to see how things go so I can use some of your experience on my own stuff.

Anybody tell me how to post pics to this thread? I'm in the process of prepping the 5.6 now. So far the 4.5 alternator. power steering pump and ac compressor bolts to the 5.6 easily. Only had to modify the PS fluid reservoir bracket to mount it. The 4.5 belts will fit with a little elbow grease but could stand to be about half an inch longer. being that the starter is under the intake manifold on the 5.6, i'm gonna replace it along with new valve cover gaskets and plugs while its still out of the car. 4.5 will be coming out of the car next week soon as we pull the uprev licenses off of the ecu.

Waiting on the harness to back. Im gonna have a drive shaft made cause i cant use the shaft from the m45 or the m56! both shafts are the same length but the trans and diff ends are different which puts the carrier bracket off by like 4 inches. other than that we're moving at a slow pace..lol

As long as you're still moving, that's encouraging.

What's being done to the harness - unwrapping the M56 wiring to fit in place of the M45 one? Or is it tweaking the M45 harness to adapt to the M56 differences?

Post some pictures if you please, or send them to me and I'll share them here.

I'm just wondering. Isn't there a simpler way of posting pictures here, instead of going through that link to keep reading and trying to post just pictures?

Can't an icon be created where you've for instance, POST PICTURES OR IMAGES BLABLA?

Lucky you. This is 2021 and Nicoclub now has a simpler way to attach pictures directly. There is an attachments tab.

It did happen, and the car ran and drove. That is as much as was shared publicly.
I will leave it up to the OP to share whatever updates he wants to.

Ah, that's great to hear. I wonder how this platform feels with the VK56VD. I'd be interested in what all was done or had to be done, just as far as using the 7-speed auto. Five gears isn't enough!

Ya I have long wished I could swap to a 7 speed transmission. Now though I am trying to find someone to swap in the new 9 speed trans. It is a Mercedes/Daimler 9G-Tronic that Nissan got a license for, built and sold as Jatco but it is a 9G-Tronic. Nissan put it on the newer Titan and now the Frontier. The Titan uses this VK56 engine this thread is about, so the new 9 speed is a direct mount to it. Who knows, maybe the OP will do an upgrade to the 9 speed at some point and show us pics :naughty: On the new Frontier, the engine is larger bore and stroke than our VQ35DE's, but otherwise a very similar block to ours. Which means the bell housing on the model designed for the Frontier should bolt on to our cars as well. Then the electronics would just have to be figured out.

That won't be simple. The new ones all have electric IVT. :squint:

PS - The 9-speed won't exactly be a DIYer's paradise, either. It has a magnesium housing with aluminum fasteners. The latter are coated to keep them from binding galvanically, and they're on everything, even the valve body. Because of the coating they're all single-use, once the coating is broken they're thrown away. For all that, it only saves about 40 pounds of weight.

Well the 7-speed was just interesting from the point of view of simplicity. The 9-speed is a whole other can of worms id assume!
