I know how much the engines go for, what other (big) parts I'd need and how much they cost, but I was wondering--for you guys who have done the swaps yourself--how much EXTRA money you had to spend beyond the basic parts. I know everyone always says have extra cash around when you do it because there are always small things you need to buy (hoses, fittings, etc etc etc)... How much did you guys end up spending during the install?

i always recommend to people to have about 500-2000 extra when doin the swap for any expenses that may arrise, or any problems that you might encounter.

i have seen people missing or bad ignitors (up to 500), dented oil pans (up to 300), bad ecu (up to 500), i burnt my clutch up in 3 hours (250), gaskets either burnt or missing (100), all the oils and fluids(i like to do swaps, new oil, run for a day, then drain and replace), then there is always the stuff you realize you want, like water temp guages and oil press etc....it gets expensive, youll see....i know when i did mine i kept getting more and more stuff....you can do it inexpensive, and stock, or you can do it up, and spend money....i have you a large gap, and 2000 at the high end, but yes, i can see people getting the motor, and labor money, but still spend another 2g's on parts and accesories, and gas, spark plugs, etc etc etc etc : D

actually 2g's is about right, i would say after all is said and done you could get away with 1g, but wont you be pissed if you get everything all swapped and wired and ready to rock but your ignitor goes, or you foul some plugs on the first crank with the extra oil you used to lube the cylinders, and dont have enuff money to buy new plugs till next payday....thats two weeks...i'd go mad.

engine swaps are not something that should ever be rushed into, they require a lot of planning and care to make sure things are done right, or else you do them over again, or worse, break something.

Fiznat you should buy from Daunttless. If he's not dead or anything and starts to sell engines:) He's going to gaurntee completeness which should reduce your chances of having to buy something you didn't know you were going to have to get.

Well at first I was going to buy from Heavy Throttle- just cause they're closer to me, and I figured I could just go pick it up myself and save the shipping costs-- but when I asked them about that they told me they dont actually stock the engines there, and Id have to pay for shipping anyways. Soooo the options are now open again... I'll just go with whoever is cheaper... as long as shipping from Daunt (to CT) isnt over the top, I'll probably go with him. Then again, there is definetly something to say for getting it from a more local shop and being able to go back to them to ask questions and SHOW THEM whats wrong, ya know?

Thanks for the advice, though.

yeah i'd also like to know the most respectable places to get the SR swap done... local or not. i'd prefer local (i live about 25 mins away from fiznat) but there doesn't seem to be too many places around here that do it. I think my best bet is to ship the 240 to dauntless and have him do it...i've only heard good things. i'll just have to check on shipping prices. if i can find a shop around here (doubtful) i'll let you know fiznat.

motors usually cost 200-300 dollars with in the US. Heavythrottle doesnt stock the engines, but you would pay for the shipping to your house, or to them, mind as well ship it to them, and have them do the swap.....even if you did get the motor somewhere else, they are good guys, and i think if you called them, they might try to help you...maybe not, i dont know....being on the eastcoast, i say go to heavy, just for hte convienience, but if your doing it yourself, get from Afterdark....

yeah-- I want to do it myself. I'm not exactly a mechanic, but Ive played around with engines before, and I know all about how they're SUPPOSED to work from hours and hours of reading and whatnot. I probably shouldnt be trying to do it myself with my limited knowledge, but I've got friends to help me and honesty I'd reather just have done it myself. I want to learn about the engine and when its done, I want to say it's something I did. That probably makes sense to you guys.

Speaking of Afterdark-- I just got an email from Daunt today-- he's outta the hospital and answering emails now! He's alive! ALLLLLIIIIIVVVEE!:)

another important thing you have to remember, for all the people who say "ohh i'm gonna go with someone local to save on shipping" those people tend to forget that you also have to pay for tax in most of the states, where you wont have to if you buy outta state, and the money you save buying outta state will pay for shipping and it will get delivered to your door, another reason i'd go with Afterdark-Tuning, they dont sell clips, so you can actually get thow whole motor and transmission set delivered to your door. where as if you order a clip from a company you have to usually have it delivered to a place that has a forklift on the grounds, or pay the extra money to make sure the truck has one on it.

just some after thoughts.

True that, thanks scott. I hadnt considered that- but it doesnt really matter anyways since there are about ZERO shops in Connecticut that would sell the engine anyways. What I mean by local is hopefully a nearby state that's close enough to drive to to get service and sales...

good point though.
