I noticed the old girl has a broken front suspension spring. The break is near the bottom of the coil and is (barely) held in place with the weight of car.

Is it advisable to just replace one spring? The other spring is fine and otherwise looks like it may have been replaced not to long ago.

I would do them in pairs.

I would have taken you up on the offer for the springs but I just saw your post, but thank you! After searching high and low I found the spring, strut, rotor, and caliper, at a junk yard for $75.00. As much as I would like to replace them both I only need to get a couple years out of the car. Here, in northeast Ohio, the road salt has taken its' toll on the body so keeping it longer than that is unlikely. I just can't bring myself to replace both ($$) if I don't have to, perhaps replacing one with used will remedy any problems.

I may try to do this myself. Not sure if I can just replace the spring easier than the whole assembly but I'll find out in a couple hours.

Thanks for the replies, and I welcome any advice about the installation procedures. I'll do the actual work tomorrow so I'll have time to check back.

The whole assembly has to come out to replace the spring, the fsm has a good step by step. You will need a good spring compressor autozone lends them out for free with a deposit. I personally would not feel comfortable about swapping out the whole assembly with a junk yard part, Unless I pulled the hub and inspected the axle and bearings etc etc.

I inspected the assembly and will just use the spring. I am going to take it to the shop. Seems there are too many things that can go wrong, and I just don't have the tools (or skills) I may need.
