Another LONG POST by me. I already posted in the mechanic forum but theres no traffic there. I know it can be a pain to make a long reply but your effort will not be in vain, I garauntee that!!!

.

I own a 1993 240sx fastback.

.

Ive decided what to do with some money I have accumulated in the bank.

In the future I plan to do an sr20 or rb engine swap. But before that I need to take care of the suspension and brakes that have gotten tired and sluggish.

1. Brake petal feels mushy, last owner changed the pads himself, and I know he did it wrong. The lines just may need to be bled, but, I want to slowly add performance stuff to the car for the future beast it will transform into. I want to get break pads at PDM Racing and also new cross drilled rotors. Is it possible to have 300zx brakes on the front and back? so far I have only seen people adding them to the front. Is this possible/practical?? (i am expecting 300-375 rwhp when done with engine) If it is practical should I also get a new master and slave cylinder that can handle the more power the 300zx brakes need?

2. If the brake calipers themselves are sticking or weak, how do I replace them? will I need all new calipers or just the pistons in them?

3. The bushings on my car are shot, is this a DIY job? I have found a DIY article for the front bushings, I think I can handle that. But is it just as easy to replace the rear ones?

4. I can see the front bushings leaking, where are the rear ones located? Are there any others than just the front and back bushings that need to be replaced over time?

5. Shocks and springs.... I am clueless on what path to take, I want performance, I can deal with a harsh ride as long as i get great performance, and shell out *SOME* cash for a nice set, what should I get?

At the moment I am running a bone stock 1993 240sx, non-se version, were talking open-differential, hubcaps, and all. I couldnt care less about looks ATM. But I want to be able to do as many of these things at home in my garage because I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to learn about this stuff. I am 18 so time is not an issue :pface.

Have any of you done these replacements and upgrades yourselves at home? Please share your info on each if you have the time...

6. What are some good jack points on the 240sx? I have 4 stands that should be able to do the job but dont have a clue where to place them. The jack points in the manual are really pathetic and I already crushed the metal lip a bit under the door while jacking the car up to get at the cat and exhaust.

yes the 300z brakes can be done all around. The bacl will have to custom fab the e brake though. the ebrake doesn't work with the z brakes unless you either modify them or get the kit. I don't know who sells the kit but it is out there. As for the brake boost and master cylindar I know you should upgrade to the 300z and the conversion is online somewhere. I'm sure someone here will have it logged.

Suspension setup is totally up to you but it can be done at home with a little help from a friend and a spring compressor.Sway bars and strut bars can be done at home as well.

Bushing can be done yourself as well but you may want some help from someone who knows what they are doing.

good luck

OEM Bushings are liquid filled rubber... so they can leak, and it creates a mess. Shoot me an email about the bushings.

Here are a few pics of the poly tension rod bushings that I installed

Poly TC bushing install

This is a very easy operation and definitely worth the time and effort.

Actually, since you are digging up info, you may as well check out my Project 240 page:

Project 240

This includes the Poly bushing install as well as the 300ZX brake upgrade that was already posted.

Enjoy!

The TC rod bushings are VERY easy to get off of the car making that project much easier. Also, since the bushigns are so big, it gives you more room to work.

So, to answer your question, it probably took me about 15-20 minutes to replace the bushigns and probably 10 minutes for the removal and install.

Other bushings are going to be murder. I have ES bushings for the subframe. They are 300ZX bushings, but they are the same size. In order to make the subframe light enough to move around, the entire rear suspension and drive line will have to be removed. Probably a 2 day operation. Obviously, I'm going to document it and everyone will be able to see how it's done.
