Hey everybody, I feel somewhat stupid for asking this, and at the risk of sounding like an idiot, I was wondering whether or not a coilover required either shocks or struts in addition to them, or whether the coilover was a one-piece, one shot and you're finished deal. I'm sorry to ask such a trite and monotanous question, but I really need this clarified. (I drive a 1992 240SX)

real coilovers are a all in one type deal, but there are really cheap "coilover" sleeve setup deals that combine with struts. do not buy these. you should choose either between a nice shock/spring combo or a true coilover system. hope this helps!~

you can check out pics of coilovers and struts. Pics of common struts http://www.kyb.com/shocks/agx.html and for coilovers check these out http://www.gpsports.co.jp/newGR6.htm gives pretty good detailed pics of what coilovers look like. Just that most coilovers aren't graduated like the new GR-6. Notice how the struts don't have the springs and how they just look plain different from one another. Just that a good set of coilovers will run you quite a bit. A bit stiffer on your butt but as long as you break in the coils (set em to max stiffness for about a month) and it's up to you if you want to ride em like that or not (personally I wouldn't) and then loosen em up to what suits you best when you go to install em.

when you put the shock and the spring together though, they look like this:

(for the rears anyways, the front look a little different)

This pic is from my FAQ on a shock/spring install that might also be helpful. Check that out here:
