Hi guys! So i need new tires for my '98 Pathfinder 2wd with 115K miles on it. Before i can do this is need to replace/fix the front suspension, I notice on the old tires that the front end is showing a toe in problem, the tire especially on the drivers side is worn on the inside really bad, so i know i will need an alignment before new tires also. My question is what components do you suggest i replace/fix.

I have looked under the rig and noticed the CV axles need new boots, can i clean them up and just replace the grease/boots? I did it once on an 80's Scirocco when you couldn't buy them already remanufactured.

I would like to replace any bushings or ball joints too.

The roads i drive on are ROUGH! and the suspension takes a beating everyday i drive it, (except on the toll road, it's smooth) I need parts that will stand up to rough roads, so any suggestions on these suspension parts will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey Leo, I don't know to what degree your tow in is, but if its noticeable to your eyes you can get a camber alignment kit which is really easy to instal and cost you around 30bux roughly to do it yourself. Generally if you lift your Pathi, (I don't know if yours is), but if it is id really recommend it. Get it to where you want it to be, then take it down and have the alignment done.

If I were to say what is most likely that needs replacing which has bushings, is the connector rod which ties into the front stabilizer bar and strut mount. Those seem to wear out more than anything else on the front end. Those again are real easy as well and pretty cheap to do yourself. But check them out first you may not need to replace them at all. The ball joints don't usually go bad, but they can and can be somewhat of a b*tch to get in. you just need to be patient with them if and when you install them.

As far as your cv's are concerned you need to get some dust boots for those things asap. And don't get the split boots as they're complete crap, but can get you out of a jam if your 4 wheelin in the back woods. They're only a temporary fix. If your cv is somehow still in decent condition, then get the good boots, pull the cv's and install them.

Thanks Swamper,
My Pathfinder isn't lifted and as far as i can tell no work has been done to any suspension parts for 115k miles, I will look at the connecting rod and work on those bushings. Any brand okay? I have used Moog in the past on another vehicle and they seemed pretty decent.

Okay just a note...They aren't CV joint axles but are called Drive shafts for 2wd models. Since they are not CV axles would it be safe to say i only need to clean them and replace the boots?

I figured it out! What i thought was an axle is not, the part i was looking at is the power steering gear.

On that power steering gear is the torn boots, can i install new boots and be okay? Has anyone done this before?
