'94 Altima xe with 177k highway miles is making a 'creaking' or 'groaning' noise from the rear when driving over bumps or rocking (like turning into a driveway). The sound seems to come from the trunk but i have trouble reproducing it when I'm outside the car.Two shops (midas and monro) have both just sorta said replace it all. Struts, mounts, springs, linkages etc. I get the feeling it's because they don't know for sure what's making the noise.

I know that one of the rear stabilizer links is broken 'cause it flops around when I grab it :D

1) is there a way to determine what is making the noise for sure?2) can I do any of this myself? (I've done some major stuff before)3) best place for stock parts? (not interested in mods unless they cheaper... yeah right...):rolleyes

There is a lso a squeak in the front somewhere but I can't track that down either....

thanx for any help

stabilizer bar is most likely the source of the problem replace the bushings for it and if the link is broke or loose replace it too. there was a TSB on the rear subframe on the early altima that required the rear mounting bolts to be retorqued(4 points large bushing monts to hold rear subframe to unibody)

for the front check your sway bar up there as well. also check the strut dust boots where they mount as well as the rubber insulators for the bottom of the coil spring. but sway bar bushings up front would be my guess for the squeek.
