I am having a surging problem where the engine revs up while stopped at a light with my foot on the brake, and was told by Customer Service that it could be corrected by a computer adjustment if we took it in to the dealer. We didn't do this earlier because it has only happened five or six times in the three years that we have owned it, but in light of the Toyota problems, thought we had better check it out. We took it in to our dealer (Infiniti of Tustin, CA) However, an hour after we got there , the service department said there was no fix but they did want to charge us $135 to clean something (don't recall what) We are thinking about talking to the media, this has been happening off and on ever since we got this car, if something is wrong with it, it should be covered under the warranty!

If your car is still under warranty they should reflash the ecu for free. Another option to try is reseting the car ECU. Honestly if its only doing it when sitting still and you're not noticing anything weird while driving it may not be an issue.

Also just thought, how big is the surge? If its only a few hundred rpm's it could be the ac kicking off and on if you leave your climate controls to auto.

I don't know what resetting or reflashing the ECU is, but it is definitely still under warranty. When it happens we have come very close to hitting the car in front of us or shooting through a red light. I don't recall what the actual RPM reads, but it is very loud. and the car is just straining to move. Fortunately we have been able to put it in neutral and it calms down.

First I've heard of an issue like this. Can you take it to another dealer? Did you ride with the tech? How often does it happen?

Have you tried an ECU reset?

I have no idea what an ECU reset might be. We don't plan to take it to another dealer because it happens so infrequently, we just won't buy another Infiniti.

All cars have their share of issues...even BMW.
