What ever happened to the few supercharger projects that were floating around. I know a few people started them but i dont see any follow thru. I would love to see this done/do it to my 240. mmm....torque

mm parasitic drag. The only time I would take a supercharger over a turbo would be for drifting. The more linear boost curve and speedy response would be favorable. Otherwise the supercharger takes back some power to generate power so two steps foward, one step back.

Just run a T25/T28 or a small T3. You'll get the same effect without the power loss: big power boost low down but suck arse in the upper RPMs. Atleast for roots...If you want a centrifugal, again, the same effect can be achieved easier and cheaper with a larger turbo.

i kno i kno...turbos are more efficient that supers. but i would like to do something different. theres something about supercharged 4 bangers that i like.

Just by the general characteristics the only supercharger that would make sense is a centrifugal unit (belt driven turbocharger). It's not as efficient as a turbo courtesy of the upgearing involved but it would come closer than anything else.

However, cost, weight, and complexity saving would be nearly non existant or negative (particularly higher cost) since turbochargers are so well worked out for this particular car and the only plumbing actually removed would be the exhaust piping and maybe some heat shielding (since the centrifugal is not being heated directly by the hotter-than-hades exhaust gasses). Intake piping, intercooler, and oil connections would all remain present.

That's my seat of the pants analysis. Check out Vortech for a start. http://www.vortechsuperchargers.com/

I thought Greg said someone was working on producing a kit. I'll see if I can find the link.

ok I know I will take a beating for this one...but believe it or not turbochargers also remove power from the vehicle before adding it. I had an engineer explain it to me and the short version is, because the exhaust gas isnt traveling straight through in one direction it slows down, hence removing power.

I am not a automotive engineer, but I personally favor supercharging. I bought a 97 Integra with B18c5 that had an Edelbrock complete turbo kit. I had ZERO power down low, with a fairly linear powerband to the top. It had a loss of power before VTEC, but that is due a butt dyno.Drove a 96 later for 2 months with supercharger (Jackson Racing?). Loved the power, was very smooth from 1500 to redline. Had as much on top as the small turbo in Edelbrock kit, but dyno on my browneye said 3 times the low end torque. Just my opinion on 2 very un-Nissan cars.

Nobody should beat you up because you are right The resistance imparted by having the turbo in the exhaust tract is far less that the belt of the supercharger though.

Crazy Aussies

Thats the first time Ive seen a non factory Roots charger that didnt use a new (modified) intake manifold.

Anyone know what the prices are like on Ogura superchargers and if there is a US distributor?

Superchargers are wonderful for 4 stroke Miller-cycle engines. Many people see a supercharger on a Mazda Miller-cycle 4 banger and think...Gee, I can do that! In fact, a turbocharger is exhaust driven, which operates off of the wasted exhaust energy which allows the very inefficient 4 stroke gas engine to recover some of the ill wasted heat energy. The parasitic drag of the supercharger is a setback for that type of forced induction. In principal a Jackson supercharger equals 80-100 horses of bolt on hp/torque, when you offset the hp/torque figures by subtracting the 35-50 hp that is needed to power the supercharger, the gains all of the sudden are not that amazing. Parasitic drag is a bummer. Especially when the 35-50 hp a supercharger demands come directly off the crank. Superchargers are easier to install, are less problematic, are easier to service, are easier to tune. However, nothing beats a turbocharged induction unit on added brute horsepower. A turbo is problematic in general, especially when the turbo is a hybrid and it's not matched to the particular application and powerband. There are more variables to consider with a turbocharger than with a supercharger. All a supercharger really is, is a belt driven turbo.

Let the boys play with superchargers and the men play with turbos.

yeah, the "boys" drive supercharged over 6000hp dragsters.......

Actually, it's the other way around. A turbocharger is just a supercharger that is powered by exhaust.

everyone is tellin me that turbos are more efficient, more power, etc. im not looking to make 400rwhp. im only looking for like 250. this is my daily driver all year and i need to commute to school 40 mins away. i just want something that has some balls so i can enjoy some "spirited" driving.

It's performance was disappointing, they gave up on ittttttttttttttt. Option or one of the other magazines did that car, not the Aussies. A supercharged RB was similarly a letdown.

If all you want is 250hp, the supercharger will do that. You will need to find a first-gen MR2 supercharger and yank the blower. It is the same type you see in the Blitz kits. I suggest stepping up to at least 444 injectors and an SAFC, nice FMIC and overdrive the blower a bit. I have driven an MR2 with the HKS overdrive pulley on it and it's a lil screamer. Go for it!

themadscientist: I second that! The 1st generation Toyota MR2 supercharger is good for over 250 with a FMIC.

Also 6000hp is only possible with alchohol dragsters with $250K engines. Lets limit the posibilities to what we can afford.

If 6000hp is imaginable to you, take another look at your pocketbook.

well my employer has a guy that designs and builds custom turbos and blowers. He was able build one for my bosses porsche boxster. So I will see what he says and get back to everybody

Correct !!

On another note, G-Speed in my home town have made a turbo/supercharged Subaru Leone with the engine being from a RS Liberty, with a toyota s/c and a t3.. not completely running yet.

As a side note I understand HKS made such a twin charger unit for the old Mk1 MR2. Not any more of course. No love for the guys who like the old cars

not really. there are smaller superchargers for lower end and bigger ones for higher end. and there are smaller turbos like the t25s and t28s for lower ends and bigger ones like the gt3037s for higher end.

they're both pretty efficient and i'm pretty sure we can see some big numbers in the powerband with either.
