You're not going to accomplish much with a low dollar/quick turnaround basis. You could get a set of cams and an ECU from Jim Wolf, but I don't many people that ask about performance chips that are willing to drop that kind of money on a car that's fifteen years old.

One of the best fast upgrades you can do is get a quality set of tires. If you're running the optional 215/55/16 tires you could pick up a set of Conti Extreme DWs - great summer tire with huge grip and they're not too expensive. If you're running the 205/65/15 you're stuck with using all-seasons only, which you might want to do if you've only got one set of wheels and live in a area that gets below 40 degrees in fall/winter.

First i'd invest in some tires like Badger suggested above and go take some driving classes at some race tracks. The single best upgrade you can make is to your driving skills first and foremost.

After that, your best options for power are a cat-back exhaust system and some coil overs to lower it and stiffen it up a little. You can also look at adding a turbo, but that can be rather costly unless you do it all yourself and even then you will likely still spend around $2,000-2,500 at minimum. You'll likely find your most noticeable power gains by adding a turbo.

Since you have $2,000 to invest, sell it and buy a Miata.

Import a Laurel? They're legal now and come with RBs.
