years ago I saw a 280Z and I thought "wow..nice classic car" but I ended up getting a 240sx with a CA. Then came my 2006 Raven R6, but now I can't take it anymore..I reallly want that car!!!! There's something about it I can't describe but I can't get over it. All of you probably know that feeling. I just want to stop by and say hello. I'm going to test drive one this Saturday and see. He's asking 3750 for it..new paint and all, even AC is blowing cold. I know it's a old car so rust is my big enemy but what else should I look for? Sorry but I will do a lot of research and reading since I know nothing about this particular beauty. Should I keep the L28 and fix it up because I see people put V8 in them like crazy. Bear with me and tell me something about it...like taking care of it...tuning it..are parts hard to come by...etc. thanks and I'll post some pics of the car later.

rust, rust, rust, it's the number one killer and hides in all sorts of snealy places, if it's nto glass or rubber on a Z it's likely to rust! floor pans, frame rails, battery tray, hatch lip, these are some of the most common

as for the engine, it's up to you, the stock injection system on the 280z sucks, most peopel looking to make power form the l6 either runs carbs or turbo's, me I turbo'd mine, and am currently waffeling between stroking the L6 to a 3.1 or just swappin a VG30ET, lots of guys to various domestic v8 swaps and some infiniti and even lexus v8's have been done, just about any engine you can think of someone has already swapped into the s30, it's just about what you feel comfortable with, me I'm not a fan of carbs or v8's so I like the inline 6 or the v6 with injections and I am a turbo fiend so it's gotta be blown

and yes the tiny low displacement jap motors have been done as well but there is no replacement for displacement, so reducing displacement is just lost on me

I picked 280z instead of the other S30s cuz I dunno anything about carb. I thought 280z has a 2.8 turbo I6 stock.

75-78 280z (S30 chassis) came with a fuel injected 2.8 n/a, all dish top pistons with either an N42 or N47 cylinderhead runing about an 8.3:1 compression ratio

79-80 280ZX (S130 chassis) all n/a all dishtop bpistons with I believe the n47 head and the same 8.3:1 cr

81-83 280ZX (S130 chassis) came with the F54 blocks, the n/a's were had flat top pistons and the P79 head with a compression ratio of 8.5:1, the same years a turbo version was available, it use the same F54 block but with dished top pistosn similar to earlier motors and a P90 head, this yielded a compression ratio of about 7.3:1

so no the s30 chassis never came with a turbo, only the S130 got the L28ET and even then it was only in the last 3 years of that body, if you want turbo it's a rpetty simple swap but unless you find one someone already swapped it does not come with a turbo

So you swapped the engine from a 81-83 ZX? I hate engine swap since I don't have a lot of time and mainly no space[garage] to store it in.

Damn it all...I went to check out the car but it wasn't a 280z, it was a 280zx. I really want this car and it's soooo hard to find it.

Any of you want to sell your car?hahahha do it!

Do most of you still run carbs? That's the main reason I stay away from 240 and 260 cuz I never work with carbs before. Is it easier? How hard is it to convert it to FI?

I ran the stock su's for a while, then swapped to a set of race tunes su's then I kinda played with some tripple webbers, lots of fun there, but in the end the turbo swap is the best bang for the buck, I bought a whole wrecked cturbo donor for $350, swapped engine harness ecu etc, it's a very simple swap, the engine is basically the same so it bolts in, as for the wiring it's like 6 wires, it's anothing, the biggest problem is fabbing exhaust in the s30 chassis, if you do the swap in an s130 you can taekt he exhaust with the swap, the problem is the stock engine managment kinda sucks and is limited, after getting up to about 260whp I upgraded to megasquirt, I love megasquirt, I also run it on my z31, half timpted to swap my Z32 so I can get rid of that rediculous harness

people have been tweakign the su's and running webber carbs in these cars for well over 40 years, you can make power witht he carbs, but you gotta learn the carbs, if not, learn to swap the turbo
