I have a 98’ Qx4 with 128,000 on it and all I is good but recently have an issue with the sunroof. When ever I get up to 45mph or higher especially on the highway I have a major rattle sounds like metal to metal in the back middle end of the sunroof. Basically in the back part of it above the driver side head. When I open the sunroof like a quarter ways back the sound goes away as if it pushes whatever is touching apart so it won’t rattle. Anyhow anyone heard of this in this car or any other car and may have an idea what I can do because I am about ready to kill myself hearing it. It is very loud and very annoying. I have called the stealership and the want $150/hr to look at it. I say F THAT. So any ideas would be great.

One of my old cars started doing that... it ended up being the little thing that pops up to keep bugs out when its open, the spring had come out and it was just laying loose in there. Give that a look and see if it's the problem.

If that's not it, check your roof rack. When the sunroof opens, the wind deflector pops up and changes the airflow over the vehicle. Mine was the opposite of yours, mine rattled until I opened the sunroof.

I have the same problem! I have a 98 pathy that does this at like 65 mph. the previous owner took out the cover that slides over the glass which is annoying and now i know why. Mine has not been doing it lately but i suspect its the roof rack. I looked at the roof of my car and the rack is very close to the roof at some points. Also the fact that it goes away when the deflector pops up also makes me think that the air is deflected away from the vibration point. If it starts up again I was gonna try putting some sort of foam tape between the two and see if that did anything. Let me know what you come up with because i know the feeling. You just wanna drive into a pole!

Still looking it to the noise and what not but to reply to some of the comments made so far....

This is happening when the sunroof is closed with the sunroof cover closed or open.It starts at 45mph and up and is a sharp metal to metal rattle and loud as hell. When I open the sunroof about a quarter way the noise stops. As if it like spreads whatever apart to make it stop rattling.

Iam almost positive it has nothing to do with the roof rack. I have owned the car for about 4 years and did not start this noise till last summer. So if it was the roof rack it would have been there all along.

Iam justy trying to fix this so I don't have to pay $$$$ to the dealership.

Your roof rack is just like any other part on your vehicle, things can work loose over time. Have you at least checked all of the cross bars and tightened them down?

On mine, I loosened them and slid the rubber pad on the bottom of the crossbars over about 1" so the thicker parts were between the ridges in the roof and the crossbars. That was all it took and the noise is gone.

bmlawless - I have exactly same problem developed on my 00 Path. Mine sharp tapping noise has nothing to do with the roof rack as I took both cross bars away. The sound changes/disappears when I gently push the ceiling panel up. I plan to take the ceiling down and take a look at it when it gets warmer.

it's probably the dome light wire that has come unattached from the inner structure. The back of the headliner is hard so the sound could be emminating from the two tapping together. especially when the wind hits it.

Feels cool, hard to explain, I dont compete anymore as I hate the competition in the "sport", but I won every single event I ever took it to. That setup isnt in the car anymore, I now have a louder setup

Were also not from ontario california, some of us are from ontario CANADA, way far away from you

Nala, Ive got a qx4 cluster, all stock 01 qx4 cluster

As to the op, sorryfor threadjacking, the only thing I can think of that could rattle, and stop when openned a crack, would be the 2 entending arms.

Try coating/smotherring/overlubing the track and arms with wheel bearing grease or something else just as thick,, send it bacn and forth a couple times then do it again. Get some grease inbetween the parts that are rattling

I had the same exact problem about 8 months ago finally broke down and tore s*** apart. Wasn't till i took the head liner down that I saw what the problem was. The problem a loose track on the sunroof litterally right above the driver. I tightend it down and realized that my stock dvd player was also loose I don't know if you have one or not but look in to those. if that doesn't fix it I'm stumped. It is an all day job so take your time and label everything I didn't and it took me for ever to get it right!!
