Sunroof problems common?

Hi all, new member here. Bought my j30 last month, and now all of a sudden I go to open my sunroof and it opens, but the motor does not shut off! I turned off the car, manually closed the sunroof. Started the car, then all of a sudden without me touching it, the sunroof fully opens, and once again, the motor will not shut off. I would like to attempt to fix this myself, also I performed a search and found some different sunroof problems than this one. Has anyone heard of this before? Could it be a fuze? Any ideas?

Terry.

Welcome to NICO!!!

The sunroof's on J's are possessed. Problems of all sorts are common.

Anything to do with J30 sunroof repair is very, very, very labor intensive. Make sure you have a lot of time on hand.

If you go here you'll get a sense of the J30 sunroof procedure:

http://fuzzycats.com/j30_diy.htm

go to the sunroof repair pdf.

With your particular sunroof dilemna, either you have a short somewhere which is causing the weird behaviour (remove the light/sunroof control panel to see if water is getting in and around the switch) or your sunroof motor is possessed.

A temporary fix of mine, will be to manuallly crank the sunroof shut while turned off, then pull the fuse on it. Could someone tell me where the fuse is located and which it is. That would help tremendously, especially when starting the car up on rainy days.

Pop out the sunroof control panel, it comes off real easy, and see if there are any loose wires, sounds like the wires are touching causing the motor to stay on.

agree with the above, open up the sunroof control, it is very easy, it prys out..... open up the contact area of the switches, from what i remember, i think there are small metal extensions that hold the switch together, bend them outwards, and then pull the small switch circuit out, that will expose the internals of the switch, get an electric cleaner and a cloth, and clean the contacts, then put everything back in reverse order.... i hope that this made sence, good luck

If you don't have any obstructions or bent track, Its simply a sign of your sunroof motor dying. Very common.

I agree with that being the first try.
But mine was under a Pecan tree and anybody that lives in the South knows that sap is like Super Glue !!
lol
It was tiny leaf bits mixed with sap right at the entry.
After I broke through that the line ran through to the fender wells with ease.

Leaking sunroof no more since.

Hello all, I am slowly but surely taking car of the little things on my new to me 1994 J30. one of the issues is the sunroof. it pops up and down just fine. When you want to slide it back, it starts to open, goes a few inches then the roof stops sliding back but the motor keeps running until you take your finger off the button.
When you go to close from the few inches open position, it closes fine.

Can anyone suggest what might be happening that is stopping it from opening any farther and how i can fix this?

thanks,

Mark

I could be wrong, but it may need to be reprogrammed.
