I need guidance a/o procedure for servicing a 92 Q sunroof. The Driver side linkage seems buggered. The roof is down aft with a small space at the forward edge.

I would consider making due with permanent closure, but since the motor works, would prefer to restore function.

awrightaz,

Do you mean the sunroof isn't fully closed or just closed crookedly? If the sunroof isn't fully closed look in your owner's manual (pg. 23 i think) it tells you that you can pull off that console up above containing the sunroof switch and lights. Then there is a socket that you can use an allen wrench (3/8?) in to manually close the sunroof.

If you're talking about it being closed but just crooked then the repair will be more costly. The Q45 unfortunately does not have a repair kit and purchasing a new track assembly will be necessary. Joe at Scottsdale has quoted 678.41 as the price, about 100 cheaper than your local dealer.

From what I have heard it is quite a process getting the sunroof but not exceptionally difficult.

Hope this helps,

Nick :(

I'm afraid the emergency closure key doesn't work. I suspect linkage issues port side. Do you know where I can get a service manual on this car? I would like to know how the thing comes apart before I tear into it.

By the way, I'm in Tucson. I just acquired this Q and I think it might be from the Phoenix area. Scottsdale maybe?

Anyway, thanks for the help. I'll probably have more questions as I get to know this fellow. Like, where are the spark plugs?!

You should have a service manual underneath the carpet in the trunk where the spare tire is located. However, some no longer have them. You can always buy one from your local dealer or Scottsdale but they're pricy. I would search on Ebay if I were you but don't buy the CD-ROM ones as they are worthless.

FIXED! Removed all roof liner parts and trims. Removed sunroof assy. Old grease had turned hard, almost like parafin and combined with desert dust had gummed things up horribly. The motor was fine, but had pulled the driver side cable out of the swaged fitting on the track car. Couldn't reswage, so used JB Weld. Worked great. Reasssembled dry and everything works very smoothly.

Now if I can only remember how the roof liner came out.

Hi Doug.

It took my brother and I 1 1/2 days, Sat noon through dinner Sunday. I still have to reinstall the headliner and trims, but the majority is done. Definately a 2 man job. I did spend about 3 hrs cleaning gunk off of parts after we got it out. My brother had done this to a Camry a couple years ago, and reported that the Q was a dream to work on by comparison. I think the best advice here is patience. If you can get an assembly parts blow up from some manual or other, that would likely help. We didn't have any information to start with, but man do we know it now! Goog luck. Happy to offer any hints if you run into snags.

Awrightaz, can you possibly ouline the major steps and tell us what pitfalls you noticed? I'll be doing work on a sunroof this weekend I think.

1. Remove sunroof controller and unplug2. Remove lense of dome light assy and remove 2 screws and remove dome light. Unplug3. Pull off the inner door weatherstripping. It is held on by spring tension. (X4)4. Remove side headliner trim pieces (4). These kind of pop out.5. Pull free the upper end of the doorpost trim to access the parts beneath.6. Remove the small visor piece above the rear view mirror.7. Remove rear view mirror.8. Remove the forward headliner trim piece w/ sunvisors.9. Free the upper portion of the rear quarter trim section. No need to remove the whole thing. We removed the sunroof assy with the roof in the closed position (or at least as closed as we could get it). I think this was a mistake. I think it would come out more easily if the sunroof were in the open postion.10. Remove plastic buttons holding headliner in around perimeter (6 I believe). Now for the headliner. There is a plastic edge piece piece along the left and right side of the sunroof opening that captures the clips that hold the headliner to the edges of the sunroof opening. We tried to free the headliner from the clips, but what finally worked was to slide that plastic edge piece forward, thus freeing the clips from the edge of the sunroof while leaving them on the headliner. These are the two tricky edges, the others just kind of slip out. It takes some patience, jiggling and 2 people. Once free, the headliner fall down and we just slid it back onto the rear window deck and let it be.10. Move both front seats as far forward as they will go with the seatbacks fully upright, like during takeoff! 11. Remove the silver metal bracket at the front of the sunroof assy and I think we removed the motor at that time.12. The sunroof assembly is bolted to the car around its perimeter. It's clear once you get there. We removed the assembly through the right rear door. For that, my brother removed the sill plate in that door so he could free the bottom portion of the door post trim on the right side. I honestly don't know if that was necessary or precautionary as I was involved in some other operation at the time.

Now you've got the beast out. Put it somewhere you can work on it. There is a cross member at the rear of the sunroof that slides fore and aft. Remove this by unscrewing it from the little plastic fittings that slide in the tracks.

Remove the end plugs from the tracks and then the whole thing can be run out and there you are.

Fix and reassemble.

By the way, we were 8 Budweisers into it at this point.

Things to watch for:

1. The sunroof assembly has very sharp edges. Mind that lovely leather interior.2. By the time you get to handling the sunroof assy, your hands are likely greasy. Mind the cloth inset part of the sunroof.3. The wiring harness leading to the dome light is held on by fragile little plastic harness. Try to keep at least 2 of the fasteners intact.4. On reassembly; The crossmember behind the sunroof has to be attached to the carriers AFTER the carriers are installed in the slides. There is an interference that won't allow it otherwise.

And finally, we found a little elastic string that went all around the perimeter of the headliner. I have NO idea what that is all about.

I hope this helps. Give me a shout if you hit a snag.

Thanks so much for the post. It was a great reference, especially the line that says, "what finally worked was to slide that plastic edge piece forward, thus freeing the clips from the edge of the sunroof while leaving them on the headliner". Well, with your procedure it took 2 of us 7 or 8 hours to get the sunroof off the roof of the car, inspect it, and then reassemble, but we couldn't figure out how to remove the assembly from the car. When you took it out from the right rear door, was the sunroof angled forward or backward...that is, was it oriented from rear glass to bottom of front seats, or from bottom of back seat to top of front seats? We tried one way, and the tape measure indicated the other way wouldn't work either, even if we rotated the whole thing. Same year Q too, so I maybe measured wrong!Didn't matter too much...it quickly became really obvious the roof wasn't re-workable. The current owner recently bought it, and it was dead obvious that the previous owner had tried to fix it (stripping almost every fastener along the way), and had broken a lot of things in the process. The crossmember was in the trunk at the time of purchase! Looked like the worm gear is completely missing from the passenger-side track, so only 1 side moves when you turn the crank. Leaves a 1/4" crack on that side and just won't close.

Stripped fasteners aren't good. It is possible that the worm cable had pulled out of the swaged fitting (as on mine) and the motor had just processed the cable right on through to the other side (so to speak). My Infinit dealer said there was a rebuild kit available for $100 approx. I don't know what's in it.

To remove the sunroof assemble, we rotated it 90 degrees and tilted it so that it was up in the rear, down at the front and it was a very close fit coming out. But out it came!

Hope you get that thing working. I took my wife out last night for a spring drive to look at stars! We cruised out of town, turned up the Bose, opened the roof and took in that wonderful desert night sky.

1 1/2 days were a small price to pay!
