Sunny 1.3 (E13S) idle problem

A great resource for Nissan Sentra, Infiniti G20, 200sx, Pulsar, NX1600, NX2000, Tsuru, Primera and Sunny owners.

Hi there, I own a sunny (or pulsar or sentra) 1.3 '87 (engine code e13s) and I have idle and power problems. Recently I replaced the head gasket and after installing new timing belt and tensioner the idle is pretty rough (unstable) and the engine seems to have lack of power. The exhaust fumes smell gas heavily (no color smoke just white and smelly) and the mileage has dropped. Trying to exclude some potential causes I tried to check again the timing belt but unfortunately the crankshaft pulley bolt won't come out so I was wondering if I could check the timing by looking at the degree indicator on the pulley with the camshaft mark aligned

Having the camshaft sprocket as in picture I read 5-7 degrees btdc so should I consider my timing ok? If it's any help when rotating the distributor away from the center mark the engine stalls and becomes noisy (on far end of one side liquid gas comes out of the exhaust). And the worse is that the engine behavior was rough before the gasket change and I can't be sure if it's a timing problem or else (carb, vacuum leak...). If anyone could help

I see no one is able to help, so I figured it out myself. The problem was the timing mark eventually, I should have aligned with the triangle and not the circle (one tooth off) for the e13 engine. The crankshaft was set to 0 degrees for the alignment. Now another problem arised (surprise), when I revved up (>5k rpm) the engine started knocking heavily. After opening the rocker cover I saw the rocker arm shaft being almost unscrewed (can't tell if it unscrewed or the bolt came off with the thread). I think I saw helicoil being used (PO must have installed) so I might get away with only a new set of bolts? Unfortunately shreds of metal are dropped on the camshaft and if I can't clean it I will have to take it out. Anyone with similar experience? Have a nice weekend everyone
