Well today I was coming home from atlantic city when i passed a cop doing 70 in a 55. I get pulled over and I show him my SBA card hoping he would let me go since i have no points on my license. What do you know.. he comes back to me with a summons for my tints instead of giving me a moving violation. Any suggestions on how to get out of this ? i don't feel like driving back to nj just for a damn ticket.

For NJ, just send the paperwork in.. If it were in NY, I could help you out, but IDK the paperwork etc for NJ, and even so its probably a small fine (how much?)....

NJ cops are notorious for tint tickets, they use it as a reason to try and get you on some other trumped up charge...

Small Business Association card? Whats that supposed to do? lol

i used my aunts sba card kind of like a pba but she's a sergent. helped me get out of a moving violation! the damn ticket is written like crap i could barely read any of it.. might have to call to see how much the summons will cost b/c it does not have any prices on it.

man i feel your pain bro!

i was always that guy to have dark tint like 20% or even as low as 5% on all my cars in NY... i even went to 20% on my AC when i was living in NC... BIG MISTAKE! out of all my years driving... 12+ i got my first tint ticket driving to work when i lived in AC... and there was nothing else i was doing wrong while driving. in order to have the ticket thrown out in the nc court.. i had to re-do my tint and provide the receipt/documentation stating they removed the illegal % tint and replaced with legal tint of 30+%. i installed 32% so that when i moved back to NY i would still be well within the legal allowance... it sucks because i like having it darker but now that im getting older... i rather not have the inconvenience of a stupid ticket... for tint.good luck with that man!

I am actually a cop in virginia. Been one for about 5 years now. The reason cops are anal about tint tickets is actually because it is an officer safety issue for us. When a person has illegal tint on their car and Im walking up to a stopped car, belive it or not It is almost impossible to see what/whos going on in the vechicle approaching which we are trained to look for. Cant tell you all the guns, knives, shotguns I have pulled out of cars that I had no idea they were in. Once found a juvenile runaway that was missing from home for about a month in the cargo area of an SUV whos windows were illegally tinted. So Tint is a big deal here in virginia.

Now here is the thing about your situation. When a cop gives you a ticket for an EQUIPMENT violation such as tint, headlight brake light etc rather than a MOVING violaton, you are actually getting the better end of the two deals. If you were stopped for speeding and got a ticket for tint i hate to say this but you got the better ticket because speding tickets= (-)points on your record, insurance rates climb, $$$ court costs(if you choose to go to court), and a violation fee. With an equipment violation in most states as long as you fix it and bring proof to court that it is fixed that will be the end of it. Wont stay on your record, dont need a lawyer, wont have to pay for the ticket, no court cost no nothing.

I have seen people actually come to court with balls of tint in their hand and show it to the judge and he dismiss the ticket. But you dont have to go that far. Just get the tint adjusted at a reputable place that is going to use a CALIBRATED yes CALIBRATED tint meter and bring a service invoice or recepit to court. Show the judge that you have corrected your equipment violation and that should be the end of it. Its a little more of a hassle but trust me a speeding ticket would have been worse. Even worse the cop could have been a jerk to you and given you both tickets.

good luck to you and if you ever have any questions let me know. btw i dont know what NJ is like but in VA its rude to whip out your PBA or similar card when a cop stops you. Just for future references :-) its probally 0% effective and i really dont know where that all started from.

First, let me start by saying I have nothing against most LEOs, and I fully support them in their duties. But I definitely don't buy this:

If that were the case no tint would be legal anywhere. Why is it legal in Illinois for my to have no restrictions on tint for my back windows (I know I drive a coupe, but pretend it is a four-door) but nothing (yes, nothing) on the front windows, but just across the border in Indiana I can only go 35% (or so - don't really know for sure) all the way around the car. You wouldn't be able to see the rear-seat passengers in my car upon approaching, but it might be easier by Indiana law. Is there research somewhere that determined different levels of safety for LEOs in different states? If it was a safety issue, I would certainly think the laws would be much closer from state to state.

Additionally, I should probably by driving naked too with no tints. I think I could just as easily conceal a handgun in a hoodie as I could with tinted windows. Fact is, if I wanted to shoot an LEO, I could. It's certainly not difficult to do (very true, though sad, statement). Getting away with it is another story. It all comes down to the mindset of the individual. If they want to harm people, having versus not having tinted windows wont make a bit of difference (IMO).

I'll even go one step further (in my personal case, cause I HATE tint tickets). If you feel threatened by me when you pull me over, (only been pulled over once for a moving violation, and the state trooper didn't even notice the window tints - 20% front, 5% rear - rear tint being illegal in IL), treat me as more of a threat. I'll gladly shut the car off and stick my hands out the window (I always flip my dome light on when I get pulled over so the LEO can see inside as he walks up to the car - actually, maybe more so that the level of tint isn't as extreme). Go ahead and cuff me and pull me out of the car and search it. But once you realize there is no threat, don't write me the ticket. You'll never catch me driving under the influence, with a weapon/drugs/etc because I don't do it, so why waste the time on writing a tint ticket once you've established that is the worst thing I'm doing?

Finally, if the driver is not doing anything wrong (which I will admit is very unlikely given how most people drive) other than having tinted windows, isn't it somewhat counter intuitive to pull them over for being a threat? Couldn't this be the thing that sets them off an pushes them over the edge. Do you stop and talk to every huge dude you see walking down the street? After all, if he's big enough to be able to beat the crap out of you easily, shouldn't that be considered a threat? Or what about the jackass driving like a raving lunatic? I've been pulled over for tints and had people run red lights at the same time as me being pulled over. Isn't this more of a threat (at least to other drivers, if not the LEO)? It's amazing the amount of poor driving I see Chicago officers let slide, but then I can get upwards of 4 tint tickets in under 8 months. Mind-boggling.

Sorry for the long post, but this topic gets my blood pressure up...

AppleBonker,

Before go I go any further I want to say that I dont want this to turn into one of those ghey forum arguments. THIS IS NOT AN ARGUMENT. Honestly the only reason i posted was to offer some insight into the real reason cops do what they do, not the reason everyone assumes they do what they do. Although you may not "buy" it, Im telling you that this IS the reason tint is restricted from state to state. And that IS the reason some cops have it out for tint. Sorry I know it sucks but it is what it is. I understand your frustration because before I was a police officer I got a tint ticket my self and i felt like i was being picked on. For me it was hard to understand until I experienced the job. Do i write tint tickets...No but i understand it now.

The purpose of tint is to darken windows and like it or not unfortunately there are lots of kidnappers and drug dealers that messed it up for all of us. If i remember correctly there is a boatload of em in chicago (not trying to be funny the numbers in chicago are sky high). And I can only blab nad go on a rant on this because tint HAS restricted my view into the cabin of a vehicle before to the point where i couldnt see what everyones hands are doing which is my main safetly concern. At night time under street lights with police lights flashing it is difficult with tint on the window. Usually i will ask my drivers if this were the case to turn on their dome light. problem solved for me....but unfortunately that is not enough for some officers. Some LEOS REALLY have it out for tint im not going to lie to you. And the safety concern is the reason why. Like you said you may not buy it but it is.

If that were the case no tint would be legal anywhereTint cant be delagalized because some people actually NEED tint for medical reasons.

I think I could just as easily conceal a handgun in a hoodie as I could with tinted windowsVery true, but why make the situations more effed up than it already is? Traffic stops are already unfair advantages for police officer because essentially we are walking up to a surprise. The person being pulled over knows whats coming but we dont know what we are walking up to. tint or no tint. Tint just increases that level of concealment on the bad guys behalf. we are taught we need to see whos in your car. I know everyone hates cops peeking all in their car but unfortunately thats how we find runaways, wanted people, suspects etc. For me it is also how lower MY level of suspicion (if there is any to begin with) so i can begin to build a little repore with whos in the car- I Just peek through the windows, look around, no one has anything in their hands, nothing wedged between the seat as far as i can tell, no one has that "help me ive just been kidnapped" look on their face, and move on with talking/ focousing on the driver and what he/she is telling me.

As for your state trooper that pulled you over for your moving violation perhaps he DID notice your tint was illegal and being a trooper im sure that he did. Or even worse maybe there is the possiblity that he wanted to give you the s***tier ticket. Matter of fact since tint is illegal in your state im VERRY sure he noticed. Honestly a cop who wanted to give a kid a break would have only written you for the tint which was blatantly illegal and not the moving violation. You were stopped for a moving violation right??

BTW just as a side note you will notice the "hotter" "sunnier" states tend to allow darker tint than the others. Not fair I know but people with medical conditions need it darker depending on the environment.

Also when I stop any car i really dont like pulling drivers out of cars and detaining them for no reason. I dont feel like setting myself up for a lawsuit or job loss. Not to mention thats just not fair to the public. I think you putting on your dome light is awsome and appreciative. But we CANT just ask people to step out of their cars and search it because their windows are tinted. So that wouldnt work either.

Iam sorry to go on a rant as well but I just want people to understand why cops do what we do. Honestly im 24 years old, im young i like fast cars loud mufflers and sport bikes. I personally dont even have an interest in writting tickets at work anymore. Its not my thing and I hate having to go to court on my days off. yes there are some of us out there who dont like writting tickets. Matter of fact when I first got hired here before i could go to the academy they made me completely legalize everything I had on my car I had at the time and my yamaha r1. It sucked and I was pissed. Had to change my tint too. I didnt understand it then but I do get it now and I just wanted to share some of what I learned with you guys. It is ok to be pissed off at the law for picking on you guys because like I said earlier unfortunately the drug dealers and felons and kidnappers messed it up for everyone.

i actually got a ticket driving back from Atlantic city as well on friday. I was very nice to a cop and he gave me a ticket for Radar detector instead ofthe tints and running a stop sign. The ticket was for obstraction of the windshield....$54. He says he hates those things. i dont care....he spared me for the moving violations and the tints.

I skimmed it. I realize your frame of reference. I don't know how old you are and I don't care much to know (not being rude buddy.) My uncle who is very close to me is a Sergeant in CT now and he admits when he was younger he was trained to scope out people with flashy cars, tints, etc etc... It's easy town revenue. He started when he was 19 he's well in his 40s now. Don't josh us man.. lol.. especially people who know what's really going on. I just recently got a bs ticket and my uncle knows about it. and in nj, tickets are given constantly to up town revenue hoping that you'll go no points. I've spoke to a lot of lawyers recently and done my side of the research. So thanks for being a cop and protecting the property of people, I truly respect that, but c'mon. BUT HEY, maybe it's less corrupt in the part of VA you're in? That would be almighty cool.

Well I got a ticket towards the end of last year because I had tints. I knew it too because as soon as he got out of his cruiser, he was holding a light meter! What a freakin C*cksucker!

The same PA trooper who gave me the ticket even said to my friend, who is a Township cop, that he's "fishing" because there's more traffic in my town then the town 20 miles down the road.

My friend just politely more or less said to him " That's great, no stop harassing my town citizens with your BS tickets" Needless to say, we haven't seen that douche bag around much since last year! It's cops like that who think they are above the law that infuriates me

I loved this...at least he qualified it with the Skim comment, because his first statement was blatantly answered in the quoted post, haha.

First, welcome to NICO ojhendrix! Way to jump right into the think of things. It is more fun that way.

Personally, I completely understand the laws behind the tints, and I like them. When I see a Dodge Charger sitting at a corner with 5% all the way around...HE IS IN MY LANE! I was trying to get him to move so I could get past him, but it is like talking to a deaf person, you have no idea if they are aknowledging you...or ignoring you or flipping you off...that is just...annoying I guess.

And we all know cops around the country pull thousands of people over each day (would you say you pull over 20 a day on a normal day?) And there is never anything bad on 99.99999999% of those stops, but that 1 stop when they pull over the drug dealer with 5% tint and a 100Gs worth of smack in the back of his car...The thought of that would scare me...I don't care who you are...

Sounds like you are all bitter. And rightfully so. But hey what can you do. Cant change how people have seen things for years. Its cops like Nightmare's uncle that messed it up for everyone "back in the day". Cops did alot of messed up things "back in the day". Sad racist and unfair things. But dont need to get into that. "back in the day" im willing to bet he was trained to look for alot of things that would have people like al sharpton's panties in a bunch. Not knocking your uncle im sure he is an awsome guy(not being rude buddy), but cops were trained to look for alot of things that were just plain old unconstitutional just 20 years ago back in the 80s.

p.s. the point of my long post was to try and explain why the tint is illegal in most states and why alot of officers personally dont like it.

Anyways i think we all agree tint tickets suck. Just keep your head up guys and have fun. Hell i wish things like after market mufflers were legal here in va but they are not. They dont bother anyone and cops around here right tickets all day for them with no valid point behind it. Tint in my eyes at least has an issue behind it.
