Friend had a 91 Q that he had bought over 9 months ago and was stored ever since! When he bought it he said it had a knock coming from engine compartment so he put it in the garage and hasn't started it since. We tried to fire it today after doing some preliminary checks to make sure nothing had seized during storage. Put fresh gas in and turned ignition key on. Fuel pump did it's job and we tried to fire it but, no luck! Just turning over without firing. After several attempts I told him to hold pedal to floor because might be flooded by now and it fired. As soon as he let off gas car shut back off! Fired it up again and press on accelerator just enough to keep from cutting off. Still caught hell trying too keep it from cutting off. RPM's were up and down and was missing badly! No smoke coming from exhaust but, could here the knock coming from engine. Once the car was running on it's own the Idle was around 500 RPM's and the temp. gauge didn't move until after 10 to 15 minutes of idling. Didn't want too race engine with the loud knocking sound but, sound was less noticeable after running for a while. I cut car off and tried to restart after setting for a couple of minutes and wouldn't fire back up! It sounds like a rod knock but, the way it was turning over and sounding while we were trying to restart it sounded like it was a timing issue. I know what types of checks that I will perform once I try it again but, I would like input to go along with my own checks! The more the better!
