Hey everyone. I have a couple of rust spots on my hood and need some suggestions on how the prevent it from spreading further and to cover it up. I brought it to a couple of body shops and they said it would be about $1000 to replace the hood, or around $600-700 to repair. I'd rather do something myself simply to keep it from spreading and then just get a bug shield to cover it up. In a few years if it actually eats through the hood and I'm left with holes in my hood, then I'll shell out the $1000 to replace it (if I don't sell the car by the time that happens!) This is what the rust spots look like:

Please let me know if anyone has any cheap suggestions on how to keep this rust from spreading! Thanks in advance!

short answer = grinding + Bondo

xxxx.... look up some youtube videos and see what they do...alot of vids DIY...looks like fun too...

I would grind those down to bare metal first (use a grinder or a dremel tool if your skimpy)...put naval jelly ....get some BONDO (fiberglass or what not) and cover it up...get some factory paint and maybe use an airbrush to paint on the spots...

Thanks for the suggestion! I was thinking of sanding it (I don't have a grinder or dremel tool), spraying it with Rust-Oleum "Rust Reformer Spray" (which says you can spray directly onto the rust without sanding) and then coating it with Rust-Oleum Automotive enamel. So, instead of the Bondo I would just use the Rust-Oleum. Do you think this is a viable way to go?

EDIT: I will sand it, use the rust reformer, bondo, prime, paint (that's what my Uncle suggested). If any other suggestions, let me know!

thats the right way to go but you should do the whole hood.

I would go to the local junkyard and get a good used one. Should be much cheaper.

UPDATE: I did the repair myself (one of the two rust spots so far). Being this was my first DIY body repair, it doesn't look great, but hopefully it will keep the rust from coming back and spreading. If it comes back or spreads in other areas, I will most likely end up getting a new hood. Buying a used hood from a junkyard may not be a good idea because it will most likely have some rust (especially in the NJ area).

Here's how the repair came out:

I may also end up getting a bug shield to cover it up a bit and to prevent further chipping of the hood which started the rust.
