My 1996 q is going in for new shocks tomorrow. Not leaking but the ride is no where near as good as a few years ago. So starting with shocks/struts.

It's at 128k and has been regularly service at Infiniti.

Anything I should tell the tech to do while it's on the rack that they usually don't do unless told.

Going try to keep it in good repair for another 5 years.

Are you bringing your own shocks? What other parts do you have for the job? shock boots? any other rubber bits like bushings or spring seats ,mount insulators?

Have them inspect all other rubber bushings in the suspension.

Probably tension rod bushings and upper links.

Why only 5 years?

Well, maybe it was a mistake to take this '96Q to a different Infinti service dealer. (mine left town, and is now a Lexus dealer). After the service manager and I talked about what suspension items they are going to look at,(struts etc) the topic of one of the '05 Q 45's on their used lot came up in respect to the navigation system and lack of parts in the far future. I was checking it out as option for a safer freeway car.(more air-bags etc)He stated that V6 Q's really didn't sell that well and the V8's didn't do that much better. Should of got out of there pronto.See what happens to my 'baby' tomorrow.

If he told you that there was a "V6 Q" he really is an idiot! I can assure you they sold... well.. ZERO units!

Alexander, your sign line says you own a Maybach, is that true and you have a 96' Q?

Well I wouldn't take this to a dealer, especially as it was already pointed out that the guy thinks there is a V6 Q45!!!!!!

I think for this type of basic work you can do just fine at an independent mechanice. I have a good one in the Bay Area, Richard's Auto Repair in San Bruno. They are great guys and know their suspensions well. Call Barry or Dave and tell them Jeff Leeds sent you, number is (650) 589-6880.

Got the news that the Q has 'rear crossmember bushings leaking' for $1600.00 they can fix. I figured that. No big problem. Also the tech found 'rack and pinion steering leaking fluid, and $2400.00 for that job.Looks like second opinions needed!

Question? Is this steering issue a big safety issue or can it be stretched out awhile? Did get much of an answer from them.

Thanks for the info.Alexander

If you do have a Maybach 57, please don't try to repair it like this owner did:

Alexander, i think you owe us an explaination or posting of your Maybach before we give you anymore help Seriously, WHERE are you taking the car to? What is your mechanic? so on the rack, this can turn into a safety issue if the rack dumps all of the fluid. I have a 84' 300ZX which has had a leaky rack for 10+ years. I have avoided the big surgery by putting power steering stop leak stuff in that I got at Napa Auto or wherever. I also bought some Valvoline power steering fluid that was suppose to be for older cars or something. Long story short, I have some marks in the garage but overall leak maybe a few gulps off the power steering fluid bottle a year. You can probably have some good luck with that stuff for a long time...you might have an issue here and there, but you'll know shortly after you use that stuff either it stops leaking or it will blow its load and your sunk and have to do the rack.

Call Richard's auto, sounds like your paying high retail for these repairs.

Service is at Frontier Infiinfi in Santa Clara CA. Bought my first '91 Q 45t there, seemed like a decent dealer to return to. Guess not.

They reallly seem to be only concerned with the M35's/45"s and the G35's which was my loaner car.(not impressed). They have an '05 Q on the lot with only 24k miles ($26k) and that car has been transfered from 3 dealers in the area in the last 6 months.so will take my Q to an independant guy in SF who seems to like the car.The Maybach is the little ladies car and is to be used mainly in the future when the BIG one hits the Bay area as a house.

When faced with major services or repairs, you CA guys need to serioiusly think about a pilgrimage to

http://www.jerrytucker.net

if for nothing else to get a good daignosis and get your cars right.

Much easier to maintain once deferred maintenance is performed.

Get your parts from

http://www.infinitipartsusa.com

Don't think the rear subframe is available anymore.

Wait a sec. You blew your money on a Maybach for the "little lady" so now you're hung up on paying for repairs?

I hope her vag is worth it.

And that tech that told you 6-cylinder Q's didn't sell well was absolutely spot on. That's because they don't exist. It could be possible that he's a genius or an idiot. Could he have been talking about J30's?
