hey all... well i spoke to soon... had the clutch replaced and literally at the 500 mile mark for break in it started smoking on decel. little background bout the motor... car was a na i make it a tt did it the right way... bought a whol enew engine harness re wired the whole thing all new injectors stock size ,, new gaskets but i didnt touch the turbos.... i did however overfill the oil once a couple months back and the passanger side turbo started spewing out oil but that went away and the smoking stopped..... after i got it back from the shop for the clutch job the smoking came back. i took the car down to seaside and back not one bit of smoke now back in town it started.... i took off both of the turbo outlet pipes and are clean there is however a tiny bit of oil residue on the passanger side throttle body hose but i dont see how that much can make it smoke the way it is. i took out the spark plugs and they all looked to have normal wear and no oil fouling.... i also found a vaccume hose going to the driverside BOV wiggled itself off along with another hose.... coolant levels are normal and oil pressure is strong and i dont smell oil in the exhaust im stumped and im lookin for some directing as to where to look

How long ago has someone taken anything off of the engine? Maybe some mechanics grubby little hands left a mark and its just burning off.

Does it have a clutch smell, like burning brakes? If not what kind of smell is it?

Is it only on deceleration?

the clutch job was done n i picked it up on wednsday and drove her down the shore for a break in... wasnt going too hard but no on the drive i didnt notice any smell ...
the smoke is a whiteish gray color.. its hard to smell if its coolant oil or unburnt fel....
for the fuel... i looked at the plugs and none of them are fouled
coolant... it does lose some fluid but thats because my reserve tank cracked so i never ended up replacing it it dripples out of the over flow port by the cap.
oil...idn if it is oil its very faint ill take a video and post up on youtube with the link here
but in the mean time it doesnt have any loss of power, misfire or stumble,,, the boost is set at 13-14 psi

and yes its only on decel.... if i blip the throttle a couple times in neutral smoke will only come out inbetween the revs falling

It may be an oil leak, when you blip the throttle, its possible its building pressure and causing it to push out the oil, and you only see the smoke after it has burnt obviously, so it looks like its on decel. If you have no major clutch smell, i wouldn;t worry too much about the clutch. My money is on a small oil leak. Coolant will have a very distinct smell, sweet smell, even if its not mixed to proper specs.

iv heard pcv valves may cause this... ? i looked at the passanger side one took it off and it sounds like a pebble was ratteling around in there or something had come loose... what tipdme off was oil around the clamp,, took it off and there was a decent amount of oil inside possible?

You know, may be possible. Since you have the hose off I would definitely replace them , maybe even the pcv valve itself as well if unsure the last time it has been done. The rattleing in the pcv normal, if it doesn't that means its not working. I am still pretty sure there is a leak from the engine, have you checked the valve covers, maybe by the VTC solinoids? If the gaskets are old, they like to leak, and sometimes its unnoticeable unless you take a few things apart. If you can, try adn run your hand along the back side of the engine, see if any oil build up is occuring. There are so many places that this engine can leak, especially coolant if the lines under the plenum have not been deleted.

JZ32, you said one of the BOV hoses was off... did you get any compressor surges when you boosted? Its unlikely that it did damage but it could happen, that happened to me and I didnt know my BOV wasnt venting and the DS turbo only took a few surges before it crapped out =(.

yea i believe some how the head gasket was blown/leaking or on its way out. the oil problem was just ancilary had no meaning to the root problem of smoking. anyway car is sold and im looking for another. this time im not doing the swap again although it wasnt that bad.
