Ok guys, first off i want to apologize for starting the piston craze among the noobs again, i know that there have been several posts directly after my HC piston question the other day and i felt partially responsible... but on with the good news and maybe a little bit of helpful information to anyone looking to do the swap... i finally got my engine back in my car today and have spent the day testing with many different setups and have had no probs whatsoever running the stock ECU, i have ran several different cam variations with these pistons today also and have decided to stick with a backwards '91 setup running 248intake/240exhaust which seems to be very nice thus far (but engine is still under break in so havent tested on a hard run yet)... anyway i just wanted to let u guys know that its running great on 93octane and give a definite answer to my original question of whether it would run well with a stock ecu or not, and the answer is YES it will...a big thanks to everyone who was kind enough to give me some input, and i hope that maybe this answers a few questions about the octane, ecu, oh and the timing which is actually a little advanced right now and seems to be fine, but like i said earlier its still in break in right now, i will keep u posted on progress... thanks again guys... :D

current setup: custom CAI (3" shortened with a 9" k&n cone)custom header (2.50" into 3" downpipe reduced back to 2.50")catless exhaust (2.50" into a turbo canister located in old cat space)11.1-1 (sohc) HC pistons248/240 cams10.3mm OBX plug wires (because they were given to me and look nice in red ;) )stage 2 clutcheliminated clutch fanVLSDand thats about it for now, im hoping to get one of the PDM bushing packages towards the end of the month... anyone have any experience with them?.. any input would be appreciated..

thats a 4-1 header BTW, ill have some pics of the build on it soon, my friend is running a pacesetter right now and we both feel that mine has showed more of an improvement than the pacesetter

Very nice, its good to see a success story every once and a while. doesnt the altima use a 248/240 cam setup? Keep us posted. Good work!

Wow, didnt realize you fabbed your own header. You will definately have to show some pics of that.

i'm glad to hear you have it running and everything's fine.

what's your timing set at? what other cam combos did you try and what made you stick with the 248/240?

the best way to break that puppy in is to drive it like you stole it ;) .

:D lol, ive been having to force myself not to get on it hard, but im almost at 500miles now so im about to change the oil and play a little rougher... i started with the timing set at 20, it ran fine, but i wanted to run through alot of different variations to test all components, so i dropped to 18, which was still good, but not as torque happy as 20, i also tried it advanced to 22 and didnt like the way it felt at all, noticably unstable. so i have stuck with 20 and am happy with the timing it idles around 800-850, i ran these settings with all of the cam setups also and liked 20 the best, we will see soon how it holds up through the powerband above 4000rpms... as for the cams, i started with the 248/248 setup and liked it alot, may go back once ive got it broken in and can really take advantage of a longer exhaust duration, i also ran a s14 setup with 232/232 and even though i was skeptical because i have heard its not good to run a shorter cam on HC i had to try it, i personally felt that i liked it the best, Lots of torque! and very quick throttle response, i actually liked this setup best with the timing retarded to 18.. then i moved on to a 248intake/232exhaust which was also nice, as most ppl running this setup have stated, it makes for a great midrange... it seemed that they all had their advantages in one way or another, i guess its all in what you are looking for in a powerband, i personally wanted a good rounded power curve, quick off the line and pulling throughout, and i believe with my current setup the 248/240 won out, but i am gonna try the 248/248 again this week to compare on top end power, it pulls really strong up to 4000rpms with the 248/240, but i have yet to pass the 4000 mark in fear of something going wrong before everything is broke in and seated properly...im hoping to get it on a dyno this week also with a couple different setups, so i will have some numbers to go with the mods... i will definitly keep u guys posted, i also have a turbo project in the works on my spare engine, so i will prob be postin up some numbers on it through the summer also... if anyone has been thinkin bout going HC for some extra power, i would highly recommend it, its a very straight forward mod if u are experienced with engine rebuilds, and doesnt require alot of work to make it run properly... i plan to get a JWT ecu ASAP for better tuning, i hear the waiting list is pretty long though, but its running fine on the stock ecu thus far...oh, and if anyone knows where i can find a cheap s13 coupe with a straight chassis, the interior and cosmetics are irrelevant, preferrably without an engine on the east coast let me know... im looking for a coupe to drop my turbo motor in :) ... thanks for all the replies, and thanks for all the help.. J.

ok its broke in and running strong, at nearly 1000miles, and im currently running the 232/232 setup and love the low end it has now, it tears through curvy roads like u wouldnt believe. have yet to get any numbers though, as i have been very busy for the past few days... and i do have pics of everything broke down, but no step by steps, just the bare block, the new pistons, the heads after the p&p, the exhaust setup, all the cams in an orderly fashion, and im going to put together a walkthrough of my header build as soon as my girlfriend is done with my laptop... hopefully i can get it up by this weekend... hopefully i will have some numbers too, my expectations are high, but its prob not as signifigant as i think, buts its extremely noticible, im very pleased with the end result :D

no, the problem is getting dyno time right now, there is only one shop with a dyno within a 200mile radius of my home and i have to wait until it is available, i wasnt expecting this because i ust moved here recently and im used to it being a pretty much pull in and tune thing, a day or two tops to get on... but all the muscle car guys are tuning for the drags because the weather is finally starting to clear up and the shop told me it woul be sometime this coming week before they could get me on :( ... but i promise as soon as i have some sheets they will be on here, on the upside its giving me a chance to play around with a few more configurations, and a few odds and ends ive been toying with... dont worry though, u guys will be the first too see some #'s and the setup that got 'em, thanks for everyones interest in this project, i'll be more than happy to help ppl out with any questions once i got everything tuned accordingly... thanks again

This is my first post here. But i have been recently considering a naturally aspirated setup for my S13. I have very moddest (in my opinion) goals Basicly i would love about 180 whp.

Anyways i like your setup, and i am very curious to see what kind of power you are making. And i would like to talk more with you about this and similar setups. You can contact me here or at nissanguy_24 on yahoo messenger or nissanguy2401 on AIM.

Keep up the good work and keep us all posted on your results.

PDM is a very reputible company, Don has been racing 240s for years. I have yet to hear 1 complaint about them. Should something go wrong, drop me a line, Im up near their shop all the time.
