There isn't any standard to which the LOC should be set. Unless you have an oscilloscope you just need to set it by ear. You'll want it as low as possible to get the volume you want. The higher you set it, the more likely you are to get clipping.
I would just turn it all the way down, adjust the stereo volume for the high's where you'd typically listen to it and then bring up the bass to a level that sounds good to you. You should be able to tell if it gets too high and starts to clip. make sure you set the bass on the headunit at the mid point. I'd probably set the amp gain around 1/4-1/2 while you set the LOC. They both do basically the same thing so it shouldn't make a huge difference. I would personally try to get them both adjusted to around the same point. For instance, get the volume adjusted to where you like it and try to have them both at around 1/3 level. This way you should have an equal signal strength passing through the two level adjustments. Some of this probably doesn't matter, it's just my personal preference.
Doesn't really matter which way the sub faces. It depends on the vehicle environment. If it's movable try it in a few positions and see what you like the best.
