i have a 8" duel voice coilover sub and a 200 watt amp wired up, but the sub also plays regular music through it. why is this and how do i fix it? the duel voice coilover is wired parallel.

When you say "regular music", I'm assuming you mean highs and mids. Somewhere in your system, you need to have a low pass filter. It could be on the amp (most likely), or anywhere like the head unit, EQ or some kind of passive crossover. More details about your system would help get better answers. For now I would look to see if your amp has the low pass crossover built in and make sure it is on.

The low pass filter should be a dip switch on the side of the amp. Switch it on, then adjust to what frequency you want all sound above it to filter out.

You need a filter of some sort. There are three ways to do it.

1. Passive: Speaker level device comprised of coils and resistors2. Active: Line-Level (RCA) device that filters the music before the amp3. Radio: If you have a sub-out RCA set, run that to the amp

I believe Circuit City/BestBuy can get you either passive or active crossovers. Yes, swapping amps to one with appropriate filters would work as well.

*edited because I used the word passive instead of active in the first line*

I recommend going with an ACTIVE (not passive) XO as opposed to a passive for two reasons.

1) Active XO's allow for a much greater flexibility because you easily change your XO frequency with a switch or, in most cases, a small dial.

2) High power components will cost quite a bit of money. Without them, you risk burning your XO, though with 200w, you wont need super high power components.
