I bought the Versa SL without the upgraded sound package. I saw the handmade speaker box created by one reader. Is there an after market source for subwoofer(s) installation for 2 12" speakers? Any thoughts?

Thanks

You will have to tap into the factory system for amplification and build an enclosure.

Thanks for the quick response. Any thoughts on replacing the stereo head unit? Does the existing unit have RCA outputs for the SW or will that have to be replaced too?

There are no RCA outputs on the factory head unit, and if you plan on running subwoofers it's a good idea to upgrade to a better one. However, if you plan to keep the stock system in place and just want to add the subs, you can tap into the speaker wires and either use an amplifier that has high level inputs, or use a line level converter and RCA plugs. Upgrading the factory head unit is very simple and you can buy great aftermarket head units for under $200 that'll provide better sound, more power and more features than the stock one.

The main problem with upgrading to an aftermarket HU is probably a lack of a proper aftermarket trim kit (Tho I have not looked at this point). If you replace the HU you can still use the factory speakers if necessary by utilizing a converter. Of course, at that point you may as well replace the whole system.
